A consignment of 240 dozen of eggs was made yesterday to Auckland by the Pukekohe branch of the Women's Patriotic League as a first consignment towards the Belgian egg week scheme. Gifts of eggs for the same object will be continued to be received this week by the Ladies' Committee at Lawrie's Buildings. Privates A. C. Davy, W. J. On behalf of the local public Mr C. K. Lawrie presented each soldier with a safety razor Private Davy responded on behalf of the guests. A good deal of delay in collection of the census papers in the Franklin district is being occasioned by the forms not having been filled up by householders, the excuse put forward in may cases being that they (the householders) are waiting to secure advice as to completing the papers from the sub-enumerators on their return calls. We are requested to point out that full information as to the particulars to be entered appears on the forms and it will save considerable time if attention thereto is paid before the papers are called for.
Some interesting speeches may be confidently relied upon as being certain to be forthcoming at the dinner of the Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce to be held on Thursday next. To the names of visitors, already chronicled, who have accepted invitations to be present, has to be added that of Mr A. A. Ross, the President of the Auckland Provincial Farmers' Union. The musical portion of the proceedings will be provided by the well-known Lyric Quartette, composed of Messrs Alan McElwain (humourist), A. H. Ripley (tenor), J. W. Rvan (bass) and E. Skam (pianist).
The Pukekohe lire brigade intend holding their annual competitions on Monday next (Labour Day) when trophies presented by Messrs Stembridge, Lysnar, Clarke, Miller, Lusher, Hawke, Perkins, Lawrie, Duns bee, Bloxham and others will be competed for. In view of the competitions the members have been solidly practicing and some very interesting events will be run off. The public are invited to attend and thus to show that the efforts of the Brigade to perfect themselves for fire fighting are appreciated. Messrs Koulston Bros.' have kindly placed their paddock at the disposal of the brigade for practice and for the competitions.
