Waikato River Works.
[TO THE EDITOR.! Sir,— I have to thank Mr J. Dean for letting me know what Mr Glass intended to say but did not. We are to understand then, that according to Mr Kennedy's estimate, when the section of work the Board is now engaged on is finished the surface of the river at Mercer will be lowered by two feet six inches. What the effect of this sudden lowering of the river will be upon navigation perhaps Mr Kennedy will tell us. I use the word "sudden" because there have been no premonitory symptoms so fas to show that a gradual lowering is takiug place anywhere as a result of the works already undertaken. I am glad to notice what Mr Dean says about stop-banks. He will remember that at the meeting of ratepayers of the river district three or four years ago I advocated dyking and pumping as the only way of draining the swamps. It is pleasant to have got him half-way round to my w»y of thinking and if he wii now add the pumps to the tenets o his belief I shall gladly hail him ai a fully converted disciple. I see that the Eiver Board i instructing Mr Kennedy to reply t Mr Hunter's report This wi afford him a good opportunity t explain to the ratepayers whj working on Mr Bieakall's level he could only promise to lower tl Waikato two feet at Mercer, whil» now that considerably more tha that amount of fall has been prove to be non-existent, he can undertak to gain two feet six inches.—l an HENRY E. R. L. WILY.
