BATHERS EATEN BY SHARKS.

REIGX OF TERROR AT THE SEASIDE. An invasion of North Atlantic coast waters by man-eating sharks has resulted in several tragedies, and has created a growing panic among the thousands who throng the coast resorts during the summer holidays. President Wilson has ordered the coast-guard and life-saving services to assist in the work of shark extermination, and bounties are offered ior every shark killed. Scientists are mystified at the presence of the mnn-eating monster in sticn northern latitudes. Some believe that the recent tragedies have lieen caused by a few predatory sharks, and doubt their presence in considerable numbers in the summer resort districts along tiie coast. Officials of the Smithsonian Institution at Washington advance the theory that the attacks on bathers may have be n made by sand sharks, which are extremely aggresive, attain large sze, and inhabit northern waters. There is no authentic record, it is declared, of sharks of th/> "tiger," or man-eating species of tropical waters ever having Ik iii found north cf Cape Hatteras.
