MANUKAU COUNTY COUNCIL
Monthly Meeting The regular monthly meeting of the Manukau County Council held in Auckland on Tuesday last was attended by Councillors H. E. MacKenzie (chairman), A. E. Hattaway, A. D. Bell, A. Muir, J. C. Bryant, F. H. Brownhill and the clerk (Mr A. Bell). EMPLOYMENT 01' PBISON LABOfH. The Rotorua Chamber of Commerce sought the Council's co-opera-tion and assistance in regard to the following resolution passed by that authority, viz , " That representations be made to the Government asking that prison labour be utilised in making and maintaining the main arterial roads of the Dominion and that the various Chambers of Commerce, County Councils and Automobile Associations be circularised asking for their support in the matter." The letter stated that the proposal was principally made on account of local bodies and County Councils having practically no funds available for the purpose and it was further asked that in the event of the council giving their support to the proposal that they should also enlist the sympathy of their repreParliament. The chaiiman expressed himself in favour of- the proposal and suggested that instead of continuing to keep interned Germans at a cost of 6s per day the Government should employ them on road making. On tho motion of the chairman seconded by Cr Muir the council endorsed the resolution. COTTAGE UOSI'ITAL SUGGESTED. During consideration of a request for payment of the contribution due to the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board the chairman suggested] that as the county districts did not receive the same benefits as Auckland for their contributions to the Board it would best suit their interests to support a cottage hospital conjointly with an adjoining county. It was resolved that a request for a report of all the cases sont from the Manukau County to the hospital, togothor with particulars connected therewith should bo made and that the account should be paid as soon as the Council had sufficient funds available. \i '.nthiiua iiKi#rEST9. A letter wan read from tho Manutewa Town Board asking the Council to form and kerb the footpath on the northern corner of the Great I
South and Station roads, Manurewa for a distance of one chain on each road and offering to pay half the cost. The Board also agreed to accept the conditions offered by the council in respect to the Town Board enforcing I the council's by-laws in the Town Board district. In regard to the first matter Cr Muir gave support thereto and the foieman of works was instructed to comply with the request. BOUNDAHY BOAUS. Particulars of an agreement exist- ! ing between the Franklin County j Council and the Papakura Town I Board respecting boundary roads j was forwarded by the latter authori ity with a request that a similar ! agreement should be drawn up bej tween the Board and the Manukau ! Council. i The chairman and Crs Bell and | Muir were deputed to confer will the Board's representatives on the i matter. CLEVEDOX TO I'AKVXIXI. As instructed at the last meeting I of the Council the foreman of works | submitted a report on the proposed j outlet road between Cl6vedon and I Takanini showing that it would be j necessary to acquire 18 acres of land j from Mr Burnside at a cost of £lB ; per acre. No settlement had been | made as to the route or compensa- : tion to be paid to owners of land in respect to property proposed to be taken. The route was level for the 1 whole distanca and was almost j straight, and the country through j which it passed was mostly drained I swamp. There was a good fall, and j the present ditches could be used to ; great advantage for outlets and j drainage The road would be two miles less to Auckland than the present route, via Papakura, and with a better grade it would prove a boon | to drivers of light vehicular traffic j and stock drovers for at least eight months in the year. His estimate of the cost (without compensation) was £1760, made up as follows : Formation £lslO, culverts £2OO, earthenware pipes and culverts £SO. Cr Bell said that the estimate was : greater than he had anticipated. The chairman : But it's more likely to be correct. Cr Muir: I think so. The chairman said the question was whether the ratepayers concerned were willing to be specially rated. Cr Bell thought that a lot of the propnrty nwnnrs, although tliny would do benofitfoil, would vote
against the proposal ar tlif> present time. As regards tlio rate, he would be prepared to have it struck over the whole of his riding.
It was decided to forward copies of the report to the Wairoa and Pupakura Valley Eoad Boards for their consideration. foreman's report. The foreman (Mr C. Dixon) reported that repairs to the Great South road had been effected and there was still a supply of metal in hand. With the Manurewa-Brookby road needing repair he suggested that it should be improved. He recommended that the proposal to call tenders for 700 yards of spawls be put in hand without delay. The matter of choosing a site on White's mountain for a quarry was receiving his attention. As instructed he met the District Engineer Kailwavs, Auckland, along with Crs Bell and Bryant and an inspection of the biidge across the railway line on the Great South road, Manurewa, was made, the engineer agreeing to carry out certain improvements thereto. Arrangements had been made to replace an old bridge on the Alfris-ton-Brookby road with concrete pipes. With a view of getting in a supply of spawls for permanent and maintenance work, quarrying operations were in progress at the Ardmore quarry. Slips that had fallen on he recommended the Sandspit to Cashmore's road should be removed. —The report was adopted.
