The Mercer Patriotic League despatched last Wednesday week as Xnias gifts for the N.Z. soldiers 4o billies, each holding 3 lbs cake, a tin of cigarettes, a cake of unsweetened chocolate, a ]lb tin of cocoa, and the whole tilled up with nuts, with a specially printed Xmas card " From the people of Mercer." The cakes were baked in the billies to save room. The balance of the billies go away in a short time to those members that are now in camp or who are leaving New Zealand in the Reinforcements shortly due to depart. FLAXMILL EMPLOYEES UNION. The half-yearly meeting of the Waikato Flaxmills Employees' Union was held at Mercer on Saturday, September 30. There was a fair attendance of members. The
president, Mr Naughton, being in the chair.
The secretary reported on his trip through the Bay of Plenty and North of Auckland, saying that the men in the Bay of Plenty were very pleased to have his visit and to have a branch of the Union established there. They were even more enthusiastic than in the Waikato. The mills in the North of Auckland district were mostly closed down for a short period owing chiefly to the exceptionally wet season. It was thought after a lecgthy discussion that Auckland would be more central for the head office and it was accordingly resolved that the office should be at the Trades Hall, Auckland.
