EATING PAPER IS EASY.
HOW FANNY MURRAY OUTDID A GERMAN SPY'S FEAT.
It is with a mitigated commiseration that oqe reads the story of how Von der Goltz, the German spy, finding himself recognised in Petrograd. •'spent some hours eating two parcels of incriminating papers which he dare not burn jn the grate." As a feat of mastication (savs hte London "Observer"), Von der Goltz by no means holds the record. Paper >s easily reduced to a pulp and swallowed (the ink acting as an appetiser), and the only difficulty in this case was the quantity. Leather is another matter, but, apart trom nigals of hard-pressed explorers, there are authenticated instances of meals of the kind.
A\ hat may he described as a paper meal de luxe was that of the famous I'annv Murray mentioned by Horace alpole : " I L'ked her spirit in an instance I heard of t'other night. She complaining of want of money. Sir Richard Atkins immediately gave her a £2O note. She said: ' your £2O! What does it signify?' clapped it between two pieces of bread and butter and ate it."
