ABSTINENCE FROM MEAT.
The Bishop of London and his fellow workers haw, doubtless with all the good meaning in the -world, says a housewife, recently been urging the people of London to abstain from eat ng meat at least one day a week. And in many thousands of hom.es tha appeal lias been received with some degree or .inurement, for these homes have lately b.vn abstaining fro mthis luxurious diet for no loss than six days out of >. , »von! In many homes where meat absiuence has been enforced by the present high prices for «omo two, three, and four days, the query is: What is to in- ■eaten in place of meat? This the Bishop of London and his earnest coworkers do net tell us. Beef which cost Is ;i II). b fore the war ;'s now Is Sd., and in many places U lOd. and 2s a lb., and fish, taking into consideration iti IV:-1'i'g vhl !;•, is eyui dearer. Cheese, ton, by (Oinparison is even a more expulsive luxury, for it cannot be bought u:•'!.. r Is. and Is 2d. pei !h. of anj worthy quality. 1 lie homely cod at one tinio od. and 4d a lb. is now up to lOd. in fomo districts, and the succulent h'.utor, probably the most plebian fish, cannot be procured under 2d. and 3d even on the hawkers' barrows. Then bacon has long s:nce b:come a prohibitive 'usury as a breakfast dish. Taking all of which into oonsiderat r oii, it is ill v, n r.v nice for well-meaning people to suggest abstinence from meat, but while they a r r advocating economy in i!i(f, ii would be a wise policy to suggeit -cine way whereby the harassed housewife, may make, a shilling do the service of two.
