A FRENCH HERO.
A despatch runner was recently the hero of a remarkable and daring exploit, says a message from Pans. A German shell demolished the field telephone connecting the first-line trendies with headquarters, and when it was found necessary to svnd an urgent message to the rear the only available method was to s.nd it by hand across tho fire-swept zone, l>ehiiid the front trenches. The despatch runner started out in face of a hot rifle and shell fire. No one exported to sec him get to cover safely, but, nevertheless, be succeeded ill reaching his goal without I>o : iil' lit When the despatch was opened at headquarters it was found to necessitate an immediate reply, and another message from tho trenches. Without the slightest hes : tation lie volunteered to make the two addtionul journeys. A second and ;i third time he crossed the danger zone through a hail of fire. As he neaivd his goal in the rear for the secone t.'me h<> reel red n bullet through the wrist, but he went on undaunted, and as he reached safety a ringing e!;«vr went \\<) f'vm his comrades iu the advanced trenches.
