CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE.
Sir .John Blunt, who was interpreter on the staff of Lord Lucan during the Crimean War, died at Malta recently, at the age of 84. He was present at the battles of Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman, and most of the operations against Sevastopol. .Not only was ie a witness to the Charge of the L'ght Brigade, but he possessed Lord Raglan's written orders to charge the guns, which were given to Captain Nolan for delivery to Lord Lucan. For over sixty-uve years S'r John Blunt was connected with the Consular Service, in which he might almost have been said to have been horn, h:= father being former Brit ; sh Consul at Smyrna, and his mother the daughter of the Consul at Tinos, while he himself married the daughter of tha ConMil at Brussa. He entered the service in 1850, and, after holding various appointments in Turkey, was promoted in IS7B Consul-General for the Vilayets of Salonika, Cossova, Janina, and Monnstir. He was thus peculiarly ntted for the post which was given him under Lord Lucan, who commanded the Cavalry Division in the Crimea After the war he served as ConsulGeneral at Salonika from 1879 to 1899. and at Boston from 1899 to 1902, when he was knighted on his retirement. During his tenure of office he twice received the thanks of the President of the Cnited States for the.service lie rendered to American citizens at Adrianople.
