A SUMMER MEMORY.

Wo sat beside a ruined well, With trailing grass grown over, And fragrant a:rs breathed through the dell, And mingling odours rose and fell, Of meadow-sweet and clover. Sweet not.'s of nature's minstrelsy Enriched the laughing breeze, Unseen himself of human eye A lark dropt jewels from the sky, Sang low the droning be.'s: And callow songsters on the spray .loined in the pra:seful tone; But not a heart attuned that da> Of flower, or bee, or bird on spray, Sang gladder than my own. Around a form of winsome grace My arms were fondly twining, And, as her inmost thoughts to trace, 1 gazed into her angel face. With radiant love-light shining.

What vows the breeze that afternoon Bore free across the meadows! What lovinjj words, that day in June. Flew with the hours that flew too Boon, And brought the creeping shadows' Alas! too soon the mellowing ray Foretold the darker even', And liade us seek our homeward way, But, in my memory oft. that day Seotns like an hour of Heaven. Greenock. Jas. Brown. An old Irishman, long des : rons of official dignity, was finally appointed marshal in a parade on tlv KuikV birthday. Veterans, bandsmen, and school children w.to lined along the stre?ts of the town, patiently waiting the signal to start. Si'ddenly Mike, on a prancing cliar?ei", dashed up the street. After inspe<ting the d : gnified procession, fin •rave liis horse a quick clip. Then, standing up in bis saddle, lie y.'lled w.'th a voce filled with pride and authcrity : *' Boady. now ' Every one of vez kape slit en will the horse!"
