iJiWN BOARD ELECTION. "NEW BLOOD" SUCCESSFUL. The Town Hoard election held on Wednesday Ust was the subject of considerably more enthusiasm than in past years. Out of the 399 names on the electors' list 237 recorded their votes. Polling commenced at 9 a m. and finished at 6 p.m., the heaviest polling being recorded between the hours of 3 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. During the day the streets wer« busy with motor cat? and vehicles iequisitio ed for the purpose of conveying e lectors to and from th? poll. The figures were anrounecd at 8.30 p.m. by the Returning Officer, Mr H, W. Ueissler. as follows: Elected. Votes. T. D. Camphell 135 H. A. Lloyd 130 P. W. M. Holt I*o R. M. Gillespie 105 W. B. Linstrom 95 H. W. Markwick 89 W. Richardson 77 Unsuccessful. A. Wallis 75 - D. W. Joness 71 D. Wilson 70 J. B. Bates 63 • W. Crawford 65 H. Smith 45 J. E. Hampton 42 Mr Campbell was the only retiring member to be elected, the others, offering thems Ives for reelection being defeated, viz.: Messrs A. Wallis, D. W. Jones, J. H. Bates and W. Crawford. Out of the four lival combinations, what waa known as the "Progreesive Party's ticket" met with the moat success, five of their nominee?, viz., Messrs Campbell, Lloyd, Gillespie, Markwick and Richaidsoa, securing election, the names of Messrs Jones and Wilson al'o figuring thereon. Mr Geieder skilfully carried out the duties of Returning Officer, and was assisted by Messrs M. B. Uram, Manurena, L. J. Mills and J. E. WGodhoune, as scrutineers. Thanks to the (lectors are returned, per the medium of our advertising columns, by all the successful candidates.
Bliss Barnes, of Auckland, has been appointed to the position of accountant at Messrs Stokes and Earl's establishment in place of Mr Perkins, rtsigned. While attempting to Board an engine in motion, at i'ayakura, on Tuesday list, a labourer named G. Mills, employed on the railway deviation works at Manurewa, met with an accident, the result of which necessitated fcis removal, after being attended tu by Dt Brookfitld, tu the Auckland Public Hospital. It appears that Mills failed tu gßin a fuoticg on the engine and fell to the ground, hie hand being crushed by a wheel of the engine. At a meeting of the Patiiotic Farewell Committee, bell in the Parish Ball on Monday evening last, Mr D. Stewart presiding, a decision was come tu that the new Town Board should constitute tbe committee. The suggestion to that effect was put forward by the Rev. W. C. Wood. Mr Campbell, •trongly opposed, on the grounds that the committee as at present constituted bad fulfilled tte duties attached theie'o. Tte general feeling of the members, however, was for a change. Appreciation was expressed of the good work done by the chairman, Mr Stewart. The highly satisfactory sum of £75 nett over from the sale of work conducted last week by the Metbudiat community is tu go towards the purchase of a new piano for the Methodist Hall and to reduce the debit balance remaining on the nail. Since tte working hours of the Papakura Telephone Exchange have been extended, two new subscribe!s bav« teen added to the list. Kiileman Harold Wilson, of the Earl of Liverpool's Own. 7th Reinforcements, who was affected with concussion aftre three weeks senvce in the trenches in France, is on his way back tu the Dominion, and is expected to arrive at Fort Chalmers on the 29th ins!,
Mr R. Campbell, of th<' local railway staff, is away on annual leave. In the meantime position is being filled by Mr W. Uaivey, assistant relieving officer. ♦
