t Soecial Meeting. A special meving of the Pukekohe Bar. ugh Council held in the Courcil Cliamti rs on Wednesday afterroon last was attended by Mis Worhip the Mayor. Mr H. 'J. R. Mason, and Councillors C CUfkr, I. Koadtey, R. Bilkey. A. B. Barter, J. Patterson, and.F. Hubbard, the last-named being present for the first time since his recent prolonged illness. WORKS COMMITTEE. Ibe first matter on ths agenda paper was the appointment of a deputy --chairman ot the Works Commuter, which was under cir si deration at the last ordinary me ting of the Council when the discussion came to a ruddto end consequent on the withdrawal of tear members of the Council.

Cr Roadley favoured adopting the latter coarse, and proceeded to propose that the Mayor shoal 1 be appointed deputy-chatrnian of the Works Committee. -Be stated that Hi* Worship bad apparently taken, aasbraga at certain matters appertaining to the' -business of the Couccil appearing in the "limei" bitore ttey had b-:en reviewetf by the Council as a whole. After having made enquiries be (Cr Koadley) ascertained that something relative to bis (Cr Hundley's) appointment as deputy-chtirman of the Committee hai been published, bat be attached bo importaeee to it Bis appointment was otly as. acting-chairman, from meeting to meeting, and while in that capacity the reports he hsl bronght down to the Council were adopted. The preaant position had arisen as a result of Cr Hubbard failing to comply to the dozens and dozers of requests made to him to convene meetings of fhe Works Committee. It waa recognised that a meeting was necessary when tna loan propossli came along, consequently, n meeting waa convened. The Mayo; was not called to it simply because b« had informed Jiim (Cr Rjiadhy) oa a previoas occasion that he co Id not spire the time to officiate it a certain s:cial gathering.

Cr Clarke secondeJ the motion and in complimenting Cr Roadley on bis broid - minded spirit asked Cr Hubbard for an explanation of what lend him to take up the attitude he bad in the matter. The Mayer suggested that Councillors did not like to learn Council business first-band through a newspaper. He explained thit if Cr Hubbard desired to make an explanation he was at liberty so to do, but be reminded members that Cr Hubbard's strength would not permit bim to dwell long on the matter. Cr Hubbard, in explanation, claimed that be did tbs right thing in asking the Major to appoint someone to tct in his pWce. On hearing that Cr Roadley bad called a meeting of the Works Committee, as chairman thereof, be wrote to the Mayor inviting him to take his (Cr Hubbard's) position as chair nran, pointing .oat the aobusiness* like and unusual way the meeting was conducted at which Cr Roadley was appointed. He wa« not even made conversant of Cr Roadley's appointment by letter. Cr Roadlty explained that previous to the second meeting he wrote to Cr Bubbard informing bim of the meeting and offering bring forward any suggestion that Cr Hubbard might wish to make. Cr Hubbard acknowledged receiving a courteous letter from Cr Roa-Uiy, bat said that be had noopportunity of fending a reply to Cr Roadley before the meeting was held. The motion Was put to the meeting and carried unanimously. TARRING ROADS.

KOAO LOAN EXPENDITURE.

A lengthy discaision ensued in regard to tat allocation of monies for the carrying out of the following works out of the £2500 loan for streati, fiz. :- King street, already .spent, £100; tar macadam from Dell's corner to railway station gate nearest bridge, and half chain of all side streets abutting, including kerb and channel where necessary. £1500; removing waterplpes to footpath, £l3O. Barter's Bill, storm water channel £IOO. Potter's Bill, storm water channel, £SO. Tobm street, as per specifications adopted by Council tit renJental streets, l-.u contribution for kerb and channel, £2OO. Edinburgh street, west side only, from King street to Albert strec, £6O. Albert street, south side only, kerb, channel and footpath, £3O. Cemetery road, storm water channel, £l3O. j West road, Dili's corner to Jack-v son's corner, as per specifications for residential streets, kerb and channel, less contribution, £160; scoria. £225; footpaths, £4O. Tot»l, £2716. in reply to Cr Koadley, the Mayor said that the £IOO expesdittire on King street was chiefly the cost of the bituco as laid. Cr Patterson seconder!. Cr Barter advised Ihe Council not to shift the pipes it there was any risk of breakage. He considered Cr Roadley's suggestion worthy ot consideration. The Mayor said it had been decided to carry ojt the work. On the motion being put to the meeting it wat carried, Cr Koadley dissenting. On Ite molioa of th 3 Mayor, ssconded by Cr Koadley, it was agreed that the turn as proposed, £l3O, for Cemetery nsd should be expended. In regard to the items of £IOO for Barter's Hill and £SO for Potters Hill, Cr Koadley proteated ' against the items biing placed on | the agenda paper before being considered by the Works Committee. He proposed, however, that the items should be -adopted. Ur ' Clarke seconded, and the motion'waa agreed to. ' Cr Fatterson considered that too ' much money was set down for ' Tobin street in comparison to the • work .required in Albert street. ' He suggested that the total amount I shodd be expended in *qual 'amounts ' in botn. streets, and that as there ' were residences on only one -side j ii each street that only those tides r should be kerned and channelled. '

L'r Koadley considered it essential tint any work done should be of a permanent nature. Cr Pattersin 'moved that, the allocation be altered so that the expenditure in each street wdnld be £lls. At there was no leconder the proposal lapsed. On the motion of thi Mayor, seconded by Cr Roaoley, the ».lhcations as proposed for Tobin, Edinburgh and Albeit streets were adopted, with an alteration to the allocation for Edinburgh street ps suggested by Cr Patterson, to toe effect that Edinburgh street- should be attended to on both sides a« tar as Mr Mclntrye's property on the east side, and then on one side only. On the proposal of Cr Barter, seconded by Cr Koadley, the proposed allocation for West street was adopted. Cr Koadley me.i tioned the necessity of having the, telegraph poles in Edinburgh street and other streets nhifted from ths footpaths.—On Cr Huboard'a proposal it was reeoived that the Postal D.partment should be re q jested to remove the poles. The Mayor remarked that in anticipation of tte nee Jot metal for the I .an aork la Kirg street aid other streets the Wotks Committee had caused tenders to be called for the supply of spa wis, 3000 yards, from tne Council's quarry, and he instructed the foreman to obtain quotations for the supply of tar required far the work*. He mentioned that the tenders would be in bafore the next ordinary meeting of the Council. ELECTUIC LIGHTING. The Mayor read a letter received irom Messrs Cliniie and Sons, electrical eogineers, of Taranaki, which was a reply to enquires he had matfe, stating that they would be prepared to supervise, etc., the installation ot the electric lighting scheme for Pukekobe at a tee ot live per cent on the outlay, the work to be done by day labour. The Mayor added that the Lighting Committee had considered the matter and proposed to engage the firm at the fee required, which was four per cent le?a than what Mr Fenn had asked.
