PUKEKOHE BOWLING CLUB

Annual Meeting. A Flourishing Institution. The annual meeting of the Pukekohe Bowling Club was held last Friday evening in the Boiough Council Chambers, the President (Mr A. B. Barterl being in the chair. Some 40 members were present. The trcphies presented for competition during the season were on view, and were handed to the respective winners during the proceedings, the handsome silver cup donated by Messrs Ivan Motion and A. B. Barter, together with Mr Tonkin, of the West End Club, for competition between the Pukekohe and West End Clubs, being also displayed and being much admired.

REPORT AND ISAI.ANCE SHEET

The annual roport, read by the hon. secretary, Mr H. H. O'Loughlin, was as follows : "In presenting to you the oth annual report of the Pukekohe Bowling Blub your committee desire to congratulate the members on the club's continued prosperity. The membership has increased by five and now stands at 54.

" During the past season the club has become increasingly popular with other bowlers. Vie held two all-day open tournament', which attracted a largo number of outside entries. Seven clubs visited our green, and in each case our club paid a return visit.

"The cluli was also represented at the Cambridge, Te Aroha and A uckland tournaments, and in all case 3 the rinks gave a good account of themselves, our representatives being especially successful in the pairs competitions, Messrs Hewson and Armstrong winning at Te Aroha, and Messrs Hewson and Wright being ruuners-up at Cambridge. "In the local competitions your committee considered it advisable to alter the conditions of the championship by restricting the entrance to the better players, and providing a B championship for the others. In addition to the usual competitions for the handicap pairs, champion pairs, and first year players' championship, we held the president's fours, vice-president's fours and progressive pairs. The result of these competitions is reflected in the high standard of play. "The thanks of the club are due to Messrs Clarke, Perkins, Adams, Barter and Lawrie for trophies donated during the season, and in particular to Mr A. C. Tonkin, the president of the West End Club, Mr A. B. Barter, our president, and Mr Ivan A. Motion for a challenge cup to be competed for between Pukekohe and West End Clubs. "The club has been unfortunate in losing three active members in Messrs Frost, Pearce and Smith. " A special general meeting was held on 14th May to consider the advisability of playing during the winter. The proposition was unanimouslv carried and proved a great success from a financial point of view, and judging by the large attendance of players the innovation was thoroughly appreciated. " Financial.—As shown in the balance sheet the financial position is now very satisfactory. After paying all liabilities (apart from the mortgage over the green) a balance of £2 19s lOd is carried forward to next year, The total revenue for the year was £l7l 16s Id and the expenditure £l2l 10s od, showing a profit of £SO l'or the year. This sum has been sulliciont to liquidate a deficiency of £1(1 17s Id which appeared in last year's balance sheet. It is to be hoped that at the end of the coming season there will bo a sufficient surplus to allow for the establishment of a sinking fund for the extinction of the mortgage. "In conclusion, your committee expresses the wish that the coming season will be a prosperous and enjoyablo one." The balance sheet, presented by the treasurer (Mr A. Grigor) showed that a nett profit of £ls 10a id had been made on Winter Bowls to date. Members' subscriptions totalled £lO5.

The president, in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, mentioned that the innovation of winter bowls had been attended with greater success than anyone had anticipated and it was rather remarkable that although July and August had been record months for rainfall yet most of the Saturdays were fine. The satisfactory state of the club's finance was mainly due to the honorary work carried out on the green by Messrs M. Wright and G. Armstrong, as thanks to them they had been able to dispense with a caretaker, the cost of up-keep, topdressing, etc., having only been some £3O, as against £6o or £7O the previous year. Standard of play, he considered, had greatly improved. They had very rarely met with defeat in inter-club matches, whilst in two " outside " tournaments their members returned with honours. Mr Barter went on to say that as the result of enjoyable games with thv West End Club, Mr Ivan Motion and lie, together with the president of the West End Club, had presented a championship cup to be played for on one occasion -each year. For the present the cup, by arrangement, was to be held by their (Pukekohe) club, and he hoped the trophy would tend to induce players to improve their play so that they could qualify to compete for the cup, as the two links for the same would be made up of the best p'ayers in the club. In conclusion, Mr Barter stated that on retiring that night fiom the presidency he appreciated the cordial and ready assistance consistently shown him by his fellow-members, and ho looked on his tenure of offico as one of the greatest honours ever accorded him. Mr C. Iv. Lawrie seconded and the motion was carried.
