Messrs Alfred Buckland and Sons annuonce tbat, by instructions ot Mr L. L. At the quarterly meeting of tbe Franklin Licensing Committee held yesterday in the Pukekohe Court house, the members present were Messrs F. V. Frazer., S.M., chairman, C. W. Motion, W. Kichardton, A. E. Wattaway and C. K. Lawrie, the license ot tbe Marine Hotel, Howick, was transferred from Mr A. E. Bennett to Mr C. T. Gibson. Ibe Committee tilso bad under consideration a remit from tbe Otaki Licensing Committee recommending that Licensing Committees should be empowered to transfer hotels from any district in which there was a surplus to any locality id which the population warranted such facilities. The chairman. Mr Frazer, thought it be desirable for the Act to be amended for a better allocation of rntelg than now existed, and he instanced Papakura as a place that could do with only one hotel instead of two as at present. At the same time he did not consider it advisable that the burden of selecting new sites for hotels should be put on Licensing Committees as it would only lead to friction. A motion was unanimously passed approving the Licensing Act being amended as suggested by Mr Frazer, some central authority to be appointed, rather than Licensing Committees, to carry out the duty entailed.

At the conclusion of the ordinary monthly meeting ot the Franklin County Council, held yesterday, the Council aod stall' took the opportunity ot bidding farewell to Miss F. Mackay, who has been associated with the clerk as his assistant during the past 15 months and who lias now resinned her position in view ot her approaching marriage. Mr Joseph Fanagan, chairman of the Council, made a presentation to Miss Mackay on behalf of the Council and staff of a purse of sovereigns, and in doing sa referred to the esteem in which she was held by the Council, and paid testimony to her efficiency as a member ot the staff and to her courtesy at all times to members of the Council, and to ratepayers with whom she had come in contact. In conclusion, he wished Mi s Mackay all sucess and happiness. Several Councillors endorsed the chairman's remarks regarding Mies Markay's able conduct of her duties and wished her every happiness. Mr Alan P. Day, County Clerk, thanked the Council on Miss Mackav's behalf for the handsome presentation and for their kind remarks and good wishes for ter future.
