" We nothing extenuate, nor tet down auuht in malice.
Although Tuakau baa only been i possessed with Town Buard powers tor a 1 itt 13 short of a couple of years, the members comprising the first Board, whose tenure of office lis shortly eomiag to an end, have, despite the limited income at their coommand, made good solid headway in pi icing the affairs of the township on a substantial and progressive footing. The Hoard ha?, however, very properly recognised that if Tuakau is to to provided with modern roading facilities and convenances in keeping with its rise as a township such is not possible out of general revenue, and can only be brought about by the ratepayers being willing to Btoulder the burden of a special rate to allow uf a loan being raised. To this end the Board puts before the ratepayers the adoption or rejection of the suggested raising of £12,U00 bv way of a loan, £9850 being allocated lor works to be carried out on practically every road in the township (including the tarring of George itreet the business thoroughfare), £llsO being set down lor contingencies, etc., and £IOOO being scheduled for lighting provision. llnlortunately, the scheme docs njt .make aDy allowance for overcoming the dangerous nature of the present railway level crossing on the HarrisvilK- road, wbich will assuredly have to be taken in hand .sooner or later, but as things are the Hallway Ucpartmsnt is oaly disposed to contiibute a smsll contribution of the cost ot an overhead bridge and its approaches, with the result that the amount to be found by the Board is prohibitive. Ihe main idea that the Board has in view in submitting such a comprehensive roaming scheme is
that a definite loaning policy should be embarked on, not nec.sjaiily to b.- i-arrierl into i-llrei forthwith, but. ll.a! v»iili moiuys earn.srlifd
attention in due course on the basu
as formulated irs eaa of piecemeal operations being undertaken in the future, limited possibly to certain areas that might be suggested for preferential treatment. The incubus ot a 21 special rate is a matter that cannot naturally bs popular with owners, but on the other hand expensive future maintenance is avoided, and it can be regarded as the most economical process in the long run. ltatepaycra should according 1/, at the poll on thb 20th lost., rally in support ol the loan and accord it their support in the cam? way as similar loans have met with appioval recently both at Cukekoha and Waiuku.
