Some of the pictures were genuine works of art, and brought good prices. Others were very crude and amateurish, and failed to mf.p're much bidding. One imposing canvas, fully described in the catalogue, was put ui>. "Now. gentlemen,'' said the kn : ght of the hammer, "how much for this line oil-painting of the dogs?" After a prolonged silence one buyer replied : "A shilling." 'A shilling!'' repeated the auctioneer In ton.\s of amazement. " Why, sir, the canvas is worth that!" "Yes," answered the brdd«r with .1 smile, "but the canvas is 6poilt."
