GERMANY'S ENEMIES INCREASE.
Germany is facing many enemies, and .it is not at all unlikely that before long she may add to 'tho number, r.s the little republic of Brazil, it is stated, in meditating action against the mad dog of Europe, for what reason, however, is not at the moment apparent. Speaking of Brazil, by the way, it ', interesting to record that tlvs republic has an association with one of our own adventurous heroes. This was Cochrane, who, some 90 years ago, put clown the rebellion of f.he northern provinces. Brazil was long associated with Portugal, and when Napoleon overran Europe, it provided a haven of refuge for the Portuguese Royal family. Early in the nineteenth century—to be exact, in 1813—the country was declared a h'ngdom, and exactly a century ago Don Joao was acclaimed King of Portugal, and in 1822 Doni Pedro, son of Joao, was proclaimed first Emperor. The country was declared a Republic n 1889, and in due course receive-;! recognition as such from the Unite 1 States of America and other nations A few decades ago America had the "reputation of being the biggest "bluffing" country, but the Kaiser bids fair to outmatch our cousins across the At lantic in this respect.
