BOBBY BURNS ON GERMANS
Scotland's poet. Robert Burns, had no fondness for the Germans. Tho following scathing sentences occur in a. letter which the poet addressed to Rev. Dr. MGdl, of Ayr, on the Germans ot his time:— . . ... -Ignorance, superstition, bigotry. ,tnpiditv malevolence, self-conceit, envy—all' strongly bound in a massive frame of brazen : mpudenec. Good God. sir to such a shield humour rs the peck of a -.narrow, and satire the popgun it a sriinolhov. Creation - disgracing scelerats mi.li as thev. God only can mend, and the devil only can punish. In the uncomprehending way of Caligula. I wish that thev had all but one neck. I feel impotent as a child to the ardour of my wishes. Oh! for a poisonous tornado winked from the torrid zone of Tartarus to sweep tho spreading crop of their villainous contrivances to the lowest hell!"
