CURIOUS INCIDENT AT MAUKU.
Proclaimed Himself a German. A household at Mauku entertained a wayfarer on Wednesday, who' made some surprising statements of utmost disloyalty. The man in question, who is a stranger to the district, called at a certain farmhouse just as the midday meal was about to be served and asked for "tucker" with the result that be was invited in and shared in the repast. After dinner a conversation was started on the war and the visitor vehemently began to launch out against Britishers and ended up by declaring himself to be a German. The thought that he had unknowingly entertained a Hun naturally aroused the tire of his host, who unceremoniously "tired" tbe stranger out of the house. After flinging some stones at the householder and the latter's wife, the avowed German departed down the road, follower! by his angry host. The former stopped to talk to a farmer, who happened to be on the road, and was caught up to by the latter. A challenge to fight was then accepted by the foreigner, the third party agreeing toj act as referee. Coats were stripped oil and the pugilistic battle was about to commence when the German began shivering, as if with fear, and declined to take part in the contest. • A wordy rebuke was then edministeretl to him, and evidently glad to have escaped a thrashing he made a hurried exit, going in the direction ot Drury.
