PAPAKURA TOWN BOARD.

Monthly Meeting. The regular monthly meeting of the above authority held last Tuesday was attended by Messrs D. Stewart (chairman;, D. W. Jones, T. D. Campbell, R. Mears, J. Bates, W. Crawford and A. Wallis, together with the clerk, Mr H. Geissler. THE TRAIN SERVICE. Mr C. H. Lupton, on behalf o! the Manurewa Town Board, waited on the Board with a view of securing co-operation in a projected movement to secure an improved summer railway service between Auckland, Wiri, Manurewa, Takanini and Papakura. He pointed out that the time was opportune to move in the matter as the summer timetable would commence as from the Ist of November. He suggested that representatives from Takanini and Wiri and of both Boards should endeavour to try and arrango for trains to.leave Auckland at 0.20 pm. and 10.00 p.m. Ho claimed that both districts were kept back as a result of the inferior train service. Mr Jones reminded Mr Lupton of the General. Managei'a promise to extend the whole suburban service to Papakura when money was avail ible. The chairman considered that they could not expect much from the Department until the conclusion of of the war but on the proposal of Mr Jones he consented to be the representative of the Board to cooperate with the representatives of the other districts concerned in the futherance of the movement. A DEFECTIVE DRAIN. Messrs W. B. Linstrom and F. Wost waited on the Board and ap-

pealed for action to be taken in respect to water lolgei in frjnt of their properties on Settlement Road, through the ditch on the road becoming blocked through obstructions. It was decided to notify Messrs Grant, Harrison and West to clear the blackberries and gorse from that portion of the ditch in front of their properties and to clean the ditch out to the original bottom. HEALTH OF THE DISTRICT. Correspondence was read from the District Health Officer in relation to a communication received from the Board on! the matter of the recent infectious disease epidemic but as no definite reply was given in regard to the Board's request that they should be notified either directly or indirectly of any cases of infectious disease occurring in the district it was decided to renew the request. A RANGER'S POWERS? The Board's ranger applied to the Board for instructions in respect to a cow which wandered in through an open gate while he was driving it and was detained by a person who was not the owner. —lt was agreed to communicate with the Municipal Association for advice on the matter. THE CEMETERY RESERVE. The Board's solicitor, Mr J. Stanton, wrote stating that he had been advised by the Under-Secretary, Department of Lands and Survey, that the portion cf the Papakura Cemetery not required for cemetery purposes could not be converted into a Town Endowment for the benefit of the Papakura Town Board but that steps could be taken to sell it. The meeting was adjourned until next Monday. Mr Jones remarked that it was not the wish of the Board to alienate the sections and they had no desire to make them Town Board endowments. What they did desire was to lease them for 21 years on Glasgow lease terms. It was decided, as the UnderSecretary had been misinformed, to advise both hi-n and Mr Stanton of the Board's true wish in the matter. A BLOCKED CULVERT. The Wairoa Road Board notified I the Board of an application they ; had received from Mr Birkbeck for \ a blocked culvert on Settlement Road, near Mr John Walker's to be attended to. The Road Board made an offer to defray half tbe expense of cleaning it if the Board attended to it.—The chairman was em- ! powered to take action. PATRIOTIC DONATION. An acknowledgment of the Board's donation of one guinea to the Patriotic Fund organised by the Presbyterian Bible Class was received from the secretary, Miss G. Stewart. BILLIARD LICENSE. It was unanimously agreed to grant Mr Angus McLeod, who was only holding a provisional liconse, a full license in respect to the new . billiard room adjoining the Globe Hotel. MISCELLANEOUS.
