TUAKAU TOWN BOARD DEPUTATION. AT WELLINGTON. At Tuesday's meeting of the Town Board the chairman (Mr R. Dynes Fulton) reported as to the visit Mr j Free and he had recently made to Wellington. He said that they were prevented from seeing the Premier (Mr Massey), as he was 'll, but they inter viewed the Hon. W. H. Herries, Minister of Railways, in correction with the overhead bridge, and wh'le not prepared to assist the Board with a greater sum than £750, Mr Hei.'ies fell in with the suggestion that he should visit Tuakau immediately on the conclusion of the session with a view of inspecting the stationmaster's house and the site it was on, and the correspond'ng section on the opposite coiner (occupied by the New Zealand Dairy Association) with a view of their removal so as to afford a clear view of the level crossing, which work could be cataed out for the £750 offered by the Depaitment. In the meantime the Minister was preparing a report on the matter. The Postmaster-General (the Rt, Hon. Sir Joseph Ward, .Bart., K.C.M.G.) was also approached and a request was made for direct telephonic communication with Auckland.—Sir Joseph's reply was that he was aware that some new lines were being erected in the Auckland distiict, but was not cognisant with the actual locality. At his request, en application in writing was submitted, and Sir Joseph gave a definite promise to speed up the erection of the line if it was intended j for Tuakau.
With a view of obtaining a subtidy towards the erection of a culvert in place of the White Bridge (a wooden structure on River road) and for the grading of the bills on both sides and for approaches thereto, they interviewed the Minister of Public Works and explained that a great deal of traffic paesed over the road from Raglan County, while the Crown owned considerable land on the far side of the We ; kato river.— The Minister said that he would repoit on the matter, but made no promise regarding assistance. Since then, however, he had written for data in connection with the bridge, etc., and the communication was forwarded to the Board's consulting engineer with a request that he should comply with the same. It was just possible, added Mr Fulton, that the Board would be assisted in the matter, but he would not be disappointed if they did not. Both the chairman and Mr Free expressed their appreciation of valuable assistance given them during their stay in Wellington by Mr R. F. Bollard, M.P., member for Raglan, and it was decided to convey the Board's thanks to Mr Bollard.
The Oceanic Fish Supply Co., Ltd., of Auckland, are considering the advisability of erecting a smoker and refrigerator at Tuakau to be worked in conjunction with the operations of the Company's trawler (Albany) which is to be engaged in trawling operations in the vicinity of the Waikato Heads. There is also a possibility that the Company wiil convey the catches from the the river to Tuakau by motor lorry.
It is understood that Mr B. Geraghty is to recommence flaxmilling operations as from - the first of September. Hie mill has been lying idle for some three months, but now that flax is coming forward freely, with good prices offering for the dressed article the machinery is once more to ba set in motion;
In view of the forthcoming biennial election of members of the Town Board the Dis'tict F'entors' List for Tuakau has been prepared and is open for inspection at Mr A. H. Tapper's office. Particulars ? r e given in oi ir advertising columns as to procedure to be followed for claims for exemption from or for inclusion in the list.
WHANGARATA. Mrs D. Fr'ton's many friends spent an enjoyable "At Home" at her residence last Tuesday evering. Songs were rendered by Mesdames Cheesman, Taylor and Mo)lard, a pianoforte duet by Mrs Mol'ard and Miss Knowles and a recitation by Mrs Qu't?lpu. An "observation tray " caused much amusement and thought, the prize for the most articles remembered on it being won by Miss Nichols. The function was in aid of the Whangarata Patriotic League, which forwards garments every month to Ohapla'n McDonald for wounded soldiers, and over £4 was realised.
On Saturday, 22nd Jv'y, the month's work of the Whangarata Patriotic League was on view in the schoolroom. Afternoon tea was served and 12s 7d collected. The articles were forwarded to Mrs Parkes for despatch to Chaplain McDonald, the parcel containing twelve of each of the following:— Shirts, pjjamas, towels, soap, handkerchiefs and ten pairs of sox. Donations for the parcel were as follows:—Mrs Butterworth, 3 pairs sox ; Mrs Ewing, 1 ,pair sox ; Mrs P. Fulton, 2 pa'TS bed sox. Soap, Misses Gladys Laing and Msrjorie Fi'Uon. Handkerchiefs, schoolgirls. The shirts were made by: Mesdames Brewster 3, Bates 2, Donovon 2, Cooney, D. Fulton, J. Fraser and Rapson one each. Pajamas: Mesdames Groulter 2, Rapson 2, W. Smeed, T. Smeed, D. Fulton, Hayward, Ludwig, Marx, Fraser and Rideout one each. Sox were t lilted by: Mesdames Ewing 2 pairs, Campbell, Coad, D. Fulton and Miss Hyde one pa' r each.
PUKEKAWA. 13y reason of the resigaat'on of Mr P. Tapper, a vacancy occurs in the representation of the Pukekawa riding on the Kaglan County Counc'l N(W"'nations for the seat will close with the Returning Officer (Mr H. Mainland) at noon on Friday, the 18th inst, and polling (it necessary) will tske place on Friday, the 25th inst. Mr Tapper is leaving the district having accepted a business appointment at Whakatane.
WAIUKU. The record of rainfall as registered at Belle Yue, Victoria Avenue, Waiuku, during July shows that rain fell on 17 days and varied froin .01 to 1.17 inches, the total being 4.85 inches, During July 1915 the fa" was 6.98 inches.
RAMA RAMA. FLOWER SHOW DROPPED FOR YEAR. The Annual Meeting of the Rama Rama Flower Show Committee wag held in the Schoolroom on Tuesday, July 18th, with a good attendance of members. The president, Mr Sharp, occupied the chair. The balance sheet was presented, showing a credit balance at the bark and in hand of £46 3s lid, which was considered very satisfactory. The report stated that a sum of £2l 2s had been paid to the Patriotic Fund from the show held last November. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:— President, Mr H. Pillkington; vicepresident, Mr ia\ Dufty; junior vicepresident, Mr W. B. Oldham; secretary, Mr M. Ballard; treasurer, Mrs W. J. D. Sharpe; auditor. Mr W. Lewms; executive committee, Mesdames Oldham and Pilkmgtun, Messrs F. Ballard, G. Vince, W. Bell, W. Lewin*, T. Baker, S. Chilton and W. J. L). Sharp. After some discussion it was decided not to hold a flower show this year, owing to so many residents having relatives away at the war, and it was felt that people could not take the same interset as before. The committee hope, however, that next year will be a little brighter and do not anticipate any difficulty in retaining tbeir uld members. Votes of thanka to the outgoing officers, the secretary and treasuier were carried.
MANUREWA. The heavy rains on Wednosday were responsible for a heavy fall of earth in the new cutting adjaoent to the railway station. Several trucks were embedded and the foundations of the temporary bridge erected over the cutf'ng at the entrance to the yards was also undermmed. Miss Kadcliffe, of Papakura, has been appointed to the teaching staff at the Public School, in lieu of Mr Jenkins, who has enlisted. Another of the now popular social evenings instituted by Mr E. 8. Pegler and controlled by the Methodist Guild, passed off successful in the Public Hall on Friday evening last when the children were happily engaged in competitions and games. A song contributed by Miss Freshney, the accompaniment being played by Miss M. Craig, was very much appreciated. The customary supper was provided. Mr Pegler presided over the gathering in his usual genial manner.
