POKENO.
Fortunate and almost miraculous escapes from serious injuries occurred as the result of a trap accident in the vicinity of Pokeno railway station on Saturday afternoon. The Vicar of Pokeno, the Rev. C. Vaughan, had driven to the station in company with his liitlo daughter, Molly, to meet some visitors, named Mr and Mrs Decsombe. Directly Mrs Doscombo was seated in the gig and before Mr Descombe could enter it the horse made a sudden turn and one of the shafts broke, thus frightening the aniuial, which got out of the Rev. Vaughan's control and " bolted," Mrs Descombe and the rev. gentleman were thrown from their seats on to the hard metalled road, but whil t the latter only received a bruising the wheels of the vehicle passe 1 over Mrs Descombe's body without, however, doing any great harm. The affrighted animal continued its career with Miss Molly Vaughan still.seated in the gig until the railway gate at tli9 entranca to tho township was collided with. The force of tho impact caused the remaining shaft to break, and the little, girl was precipitated on to the road and sustained a badly cut face and a severe shaking, the vehicle being at the same tiuw overturned. With the harness becoming clear of the gig, the horse made its way home. Messrs L. Cooke and W. Mulvihill, ol the railway staff, and Mr A. Bourne, of Messrs Wallace and Co.'s staff, rendered valuable assistance and the party were able to proceed to the Vicarage by motor car and gig.
