PAPAKURA TOWN BOARD.

Monthly Meeting.

The usual monthly meeting of the Paewkura Town board was held last night. There were present: Sft'-sr* D. Stewart, chairman, Wm. Crawford, U. W. Jones, I. D. Campbell, J. Rates and A. Wallis. together with; the clerk, Mr H. Geiaslers DEPUTATIONS. Messrs A: Willis, D. Wilson and, S. Murray waited on and appealed to tbe Board to continue the footpath on the Great South road as far as Mr A Willis' property. The deputation pointed out that the poptiun of the footpath referred to was in a very bad state, as the recent heavy rairs h».d mad« it heavy They consequently tuggested that immediate action be taken to remedy the evil.—The chairman expressed sympathy with the proposal, and explained that he had suggested to the chairman of the Franklin County Council that the proposed werk should be pushed ahead. He was of opinion that there would be enough soil from the operations on Argyle Estate to comply with present requirements.— Mr Willis remarked that temporary improvements would meet all that was necessary until work of a permanent nature was affected.— Speaking in support of temporary repsirs being instituted, Mr Wilson pciated out that if that were done it would te money well spent, as the amount tnat would finally be expended on i permanent repairs would appreciably depreciate as a result.—Mr Jones, with a view of having the matter orrcFeded with . immediately, proposed ttiat the chairman of the Franklin County Council should be rommunicated with and requested to give direst inurf for any surplus material that might be available from Clark road fo .be placed on the western side of the Gre t South road.-The motion was adopted. Air H. Smith wailed on the Board , in nepect to water which he Blleged \ continued to lay in a worse condition ' than previously in front of his property un Rouseiie street, despite the , fact that the road had been repaired. which was in bad condition. He

reminded the Board of. a promise 1 they had made last September to do the work.—The chairman reparted that Mr Jones had the matter in hand, and that the footpath would receive attention. Mr A. Willis made representation for a small quantity of metal to be placed on Queen stfbet, and pointed out that the drainage of

Elliott street was particularly bad, v two rcrrt of their (Messrs Willis Bros'.) property being under water as a result, lie further reminded tbe Board that they had failed to improve the footpath between Mr Crawford's pharmacy and the Post Ofticc, but suggested that the mtttcr should be deferred until the winter was over.—Tbe chairman explained that the Board were waiting for further work to be done on Queen street before passing it.—lt was resolved to by scum on a portion ot tbe ruad at d footpath on the western end and to fence a cutting in the same locality.

. Regarding the drainage of Elliott street it was agreed that tbe water-tables therein and a pipe across the toad should be cleaned out. TREE OBSTRUCTIONS.

Mr James Higginp, writing from Auckland, applied for permisaion to remove trees from in tmn,t of his property, on Young's road, so that he could plant a hedge,—it nag decided to grant permission conditionally that the work was earned out satisfactorily. A NEW ROAD. The secretary, of the Anglican Trust Board, Auckland, forwarded the deed, duly completed, connected with the dedication of the road running through the Trustees' land at Papakura, recently subdivided into building sections and also suggested that the road should be called Averill road, the name of the Bisfcop.—The proposed name was approved of.

PATRIOTIC GATHERING. Authority was given the Presbyterian Bible Class Basket Ball Club for V"c use of the recreation ground on Saturday, July 15tb, for a bHsket ball match to be played for the benefit of patriotic funds. NAVY RELIEF FUND.

Following on a suggestion conveyed to the Board by the Papakura Patriotic League it was decided on tbe proposal of Mr Jones, that the Board should cooperate with acd give all possible assistance to that authority in assistirg tbe Navy League North Sea Relief Fund, and it was further decided to t'onate £2 2a to tbe fund and to make representations to motor car proprietors in the district to assist their joint endeavours by conveying canvassers around the d strict free of charge.

CONTAGIOUS DISEAbLS. On Mr Bates' suggestion it was resulved to obtain particulars from the Health Department of all diseases Id the district as lrom a discussion that arose in connection With the prevalence of scarlet lever in i'apakura, it was clear that the local schoolmaster had appparently not been intormed by the Department at all the cases in the district. Members viewed the situation with alarm, and were ol opinion that the matter should be thoroughly investigated, as serious Hunger would arise from children from affected houses attending ;ehoo!. mitl PROPOSED BOKOUUU.

METAL FOR ROADS It was decided to order four trucks, 28yUs,. of metal for* patching the roads, and two truck loads of fine scoria for placing on the footpaths. TELEPHONE HOURS. Mr Jones' suggested that as there were then more than 50 subscribers to the Fapakura Telephone Exchange the time had arrived for ao extension of opening hours from 8 a.m. *to 8 p.m. He proposed that the Postal Department should be aproached on the matter, —Mr Crawford seconded, and the motion was carried. THE RANGER. It was resolved to retain the services of the ranger for a further three months arid to engage a man for a month to clean up the watertables in the district.
