WAIUKU-PATUMAHOE RAILWAY.

(By Our Travelling Kepresentative.) Progress on the Waiuku railway is well in hand. The formation is now completed to Patumahoe, where a gang of men are at work levelling the site for the station, and a start has been made to lay the rails at Paerata Junction, and the permanent way will be of a very substantial character. The sleepers used are of the best material and are laid fairly close together. The rails are nearly as heavy as those used on the main line, so the Eailway Department evidently intend to run heavy rolling stock on this line, although at hrst a " light railway " was only projected. The formation from Patumahoe to Mauku is nearly finished, and the levelling of the site for the Mauku station is well advanced. This latter structure will be conveniently situated in the centre of the village near the bank of the Mauku creek. A bridge of some considerable height and length will bo required to span this creek, and as it will take some considerable time to erect Mauku will no doubt be meanwhile the terminus of the line. The cuttings and formation from Mauku to Glenbrook are finished, and some very substantial cottages have been erected at the Glenbrook station site, the same being now in use by tho Public Works stall', Gaugs of workmen are still engaged in excavating and lovelliug on different sections of the line on the Waiuku sido of Glonbrook. To look over tho route the Waiuku line traverses one would at hrst think it a very simple matter to construct, as to the eye the country appears almost level; but on taking a ride along tho railway one views the winding course, which is a sue-' cession of curves, cuttings and embankments aud some fairly steep grades.
