TUAKAU.

At the Pukekoke Magistrate's Court on Monday before Mr F. V. Frazer S.M., a native, named Jack Thompson, was charged with having on May 28th at Tuakau stolen a tin of benzine, value lis 6d, the property of Arthur Lapwood. Constable Taylor informed the Magistrate that the accused took the tin of beDzine out of Mr Lapwood's launch, whilst it was moored at Tuakau landing stage and gave it to a native launch proprietor. He added that a good deal of thieving had occurred from launches and the accused, who was little better than a loafer, was suspected of being connected with the pilfering. Kecently. he was fined £lO for theft at the Tuakau hotel but had only paid £4 10s towards lhat amount.—The accused pleaded guilty but mentioned that he gave the benzine away and did not sell it.—The Magistrate, in sentencing the aecueed to 14 days imprisonment with hard labour, remarked that he did dot know what was the matter with the Tuakau natives as they gave the police more trouble than anywhere eke. IHE PATRIOTIC LEAGUE. A meeting of the Tuakau Patriotic League was held last Monday evening, Mr Graham presiding. Reports from those who had been allotted various duties in connection with the forthcoming Carnival were received and it was considered that satisfactory progress had been made. The canvass for goods for gift auction had been very successful, every resident who had been approached so far, haviDg promised to contribute some article for sale. It was resolved that the League should tender a reception to Private Basil Scanlon, who went to Gallipoli with the Main Body and who has returned wounded after a protracted spell in hospital in England. Various matters of detail having been dealt with the meeting closed. ■JIt was decided to meet again on July 10th to make final arrangements for the Carnival.
