As an illustration of the keen sense of humour possessed by the famous Scottish judge. Lord Mackenzie, Fir ,t. 11. A. Maedonald, late Lord .lus-ticc-Clerk. tells the following story In his Reminiscences, "Life Jottings" (Foulis). On one occasion when the jury had retired to consider conviction or acipiitt.al, they rang their hell, producing the usual stir of anticipation in court. It turned out. as Reported hy the maeer, that they ran? to ask if they might he allowed to have some water while they we in deliberation. According to the law of Scotland, it ts forbidden, when :i jury has been enclosed, that they should be suffered to have any "meat or ("rink" until they have returned the verdict. Everybody listened to hear what the judge would have to soy. Lord .Mackenzie, looking up meditatively, delivered himself in slow and deliberate tones, hoard throughout the court, thus: "Well, ye cann.'i call it meat" (and then more rapidly l , "and it sairtainly is not a drink: they can have the water.''
