ANZAC WATER DIVINER.
SAPPER'S REMARKABLE 1- EAT AT
SUVLA BAY
Sapper Stephen Keyyel, of the 3rd Australian Light Horse (now in London suffering from wounds), is a man of remarkable gifts as a water-diviner (says the "Daily News.") At Suvla Bay Sapper Kelley responded to a call for a display of his special powers, with a success which was of incalculable importance to the health of the men at a insrutcted to find water, and had reinstructed to find war, and had reported that there was none to be found. It was in August, and the scarcity was such that the trcops were down to their last few pints. The need was so compelling that >"t was decided to arrange for a supply by motor. Brigadier - General Hughes, however, suddenly bethought him of Sapper Kelley's reputation in Australia, and sent for him. "h there any water at Suvla?" the General asked. Sapper Kelley declared definitly that there wjh, and he was invited to find it.
This was on August 11, and within a fortnight the sapper, accompanied by officers who were at first frankly sceptical, had located 32 springs from which a plentiful and regular supply was obtained by the sinking of wells. Not only is he able to indicate the presence of water below the ground; he can also tell the depth to which the well must be sunk and the number of gallons that tha springs will vield. Sapper Kelle? i\a civil engineer. In his water-divining he does not use. the customary hazel twig.
