Tickets are selling well for the Pukekohe Boy Scouts' concert to be held in the Premier Hall on Tuesday evening next when the proceeds, as already reported, will be devoted to the worthy ohject of the Scouts' Fund. A telephonic extension line from the Pukekohe Borough Council Chambers to the Fire Brigade station adjoining was authorised at Wednesday's Council meeting and will permit of any fire alarm being conveyed direct to the Brigade at night-time. A meeting of the Pukek 'he Recruiting Committee was held in the Borough Council Chambers ou Wednesday when it was decided to employ two returned soldiers to canvass eligibles resident in the borough. The names suggested for the purpose were those of Corpl. Willis and Pte Lauer.

In conversation with a "Times" representative, a merchant in a large way of business mentioned that it was his experience that the present shortage in sugar had been brought about by householdeis making extensive purchases in view of an anticipated rise in prices. It was his ,'the merchant's idea, however, that if an increase in rates occurred such would be of very small extent. At the same time he anticipated that despite the Government's regulations restricting the export of butter a rise in the price of that commodity was imminent.

Mr Geoffrey Mellsop, one of the victims of the terrible quarry explosion at Ohakune, was the only son of tho late Mr James Me'.lsop, at one time a settler at Glenbrook, but for many years headmaster of the Mangere school. Mr Geoffrey Mellsop, who was only 28 years of age, was on the threshold of a promising career, having successfully passed high examinations iu the engineering profession. At the time of his death he was engineerin charge of the construction of the Raetahi branch railway. The funeral took place at Huntly and was largely attended, he hiving been well and favourably known during his residence there while in charge of the construction of the Pukemiro branch line. Wreiths were sent by the Public Works and Survey Departments, and by numerous private friends. He leaves a wife and in'ant son, for whom general sympathy is felt.
