£28,000 FOR A PICTURE.
Hans Mending's painting, "The Archer," said to have been the last of the great Flemish artist's works remaining in the art markets of the world, has been bought by a well-known Fifth Avenue (New York) jeweller, ior 140,000 dollars (about £28,000). It was sold by a firm of art dealers in Paris, who also have a branch in New York, but seller and buyer alike prefer that their names should not bo mentioned. The picture is a portrait of a young man, painted on a wooden panel, lOin. by 12m. Head and shoulders only are shown. Tradition has it that the portrait is that of one of the sons of King Charles tho Bold. It was painted in 1473, and was latterly in the possession of Baron Albert von Oppenheim, of Cologne. It was on exhibition in Brussels in 1911, and was bought by the> Paris firm in 1912.
