A WOMEN'S REVENGE.
_ — <& TABLES TURNED OX A GERMAN CAD. The civilians from Lille who have recently come to Paris have many interesting stories to relate of life under German rule, writes a "Daily Express" reader who lives in Paris.
One French lady, the wife of a French officer, had a lively experience. After being for months without news cf-her husband, she was overjoyed to receive one day (through a source that she prefers to keep secret l a letter from him to say that he was quite well, and tl.at she must not lose heart, but hope for their reunion. She was overjoyed, and, unfortunately for herself, could not hide her emotion. A German officer was billeted in her house, and he noticed the change in her appearance. He said: Madame, yen are transfigured; you must have received some news of your hiismand." She was unable to deny this, so a few hours later she received a message ordering her to appear without delay before the Kommandanlur. She went there, and he said: "Madame, you are accused of communicating with the enemy; you must pay :i fine of 2jo francs (£10) immediately." She went home to get the money, and when she returned, the German officer who had denounced hor was there, so the quick-witted Frenchwoman isnv her opportunity for revenge. She deposited the 200 francs on the table, then, turning to the officer, she handed him twenty-five fiancs (I'l). saying in a loud voice: " For your poor.'' •• For my 'poor " h\ repeated, ■What do you mean?" "Yes. for your poor. You *old mo the otle-r day that misery reigns in Berlin, and that the poor are suficring terribly." I Next day the officer was sent to the trenches as a punishment for having spoken to *he enemy of the real,con-! dition of things in Germany.
