Messrs W. Dimock and Co., announce in our advertising columns that their rates for pigs are Gid per lb 120 to 150lbs, sid 110 to 1201bs, and 5d up to HOlbs. Messrs F. Perkins and Co. announce by advt. in this issue that they will be buying pigs on behalf of the Te Aroha Bacon Co. at Pukekohe on Monday next. Girls are employed to deliver biead instead of men in many parts of England to-day. London bakers are considering the question of of stopping delivery to customers, only selling over the counter. Corpl. Albert Roadley. second son of Mr C. Roadley, has been spending a few days in Pukekohe on his final leave. He is a member of the Thirteenth Reinforcements and he departed for Wellington this morning.
Special film attractions are scheduled for next week and the following week at the Premier Hall, Pukekohe. For Wednesday and Friday next tho " Prisoner of Zonda" will bo shown. The sequel '" Rupert of Hentzan " will be screened the week following. A final rominder is given that the sale of the property known as Eoutly's Estate, Pukekohe, in six lots of ton acres each, takes place to-morrow (Saturday) at 1 p ; m., on the ground, tho auctioneers being the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. The usual monthly meeting of the Franklin County Council takes place on Thursday of next week, preceded by a special meeting on Wednesday to discuss the legality of adopting unimproved value rating for the Awuitu and Hunua ridings, such form of rating having previously been in force in those districts prior to their Road Boards merging.
Mr Owen McLean has removed his hoisery business from O'Connor's Buildings, Pukekohe, to the new brick premises situated in Lower King street, just erected by Mr P. Boyd. The new building is eminently adapted for Mr McLean's requirements and his stock has been supplemented by tho opportuue arrival of a largo consignment of new season goods. Corporal Joe Willis, a former member of the Pukekohe railway staff, was ono of the returned soldiers who arrived back in the Duminion last week. Ho paid a visit to Pukekohe yesterday, and was warmly welcomed by his old friends, more especially as it had been rumoured that fie w,as numbered amongst the killed. Corporal Willis is suffering from injury to his knee and lung trouble.
The steeplechaser, Dogger Bank, owned by Mr R. T. Keid, of Waiukn, came to an untimely end as the result of a mishap sustained at the Avondalo Baees on Wednesday. The horse refused to take one of the obstacles but after st,me delay was set going again iu expectation of securing " third '" money, only two utb9r horses at that time being- left in luo nice. Nearing the winning post he, however, ran off and struck the railing with such force that his shoulder was injured and he had to be destroyed yesterday. A few mouths ago a party of pupils from the Pukokohe lligh School, under the supervision of the teachers, were shown over the Pukokohe butter factory and were invited to place in a box of butter their greetings and signatures to whoever should receivo it. A letter has since como to hand from Messrs 13. Salmon and Co., butter merchants, St. Clears, South Wales, stating that thej had had the pleasure of using the butter made while the young ladies watched the process at the factory and they forwarded their kind regards to those who signed the slip as follows, i.e., Freda Lewis, Maud Strahau, Doiothy Flavell, Susy McNally, Grace Graham, Georgina KuncimaD, Phyllis Butterworth, Marjorie F.wing, Fanny Moore, Bertha I'uely, f-race Neal and Zealia Bycrofjb.
The annual meeting of parishioners of Pukekohe, will be held in the Oddfellows' Hall on»WecUießday next at 8 p.m. The business meeting will be prefaced by some musical items. In the " Country Teams at Home" bowling match to take place to-morrow on the Auckland Club's green, Pukekohe will be represented by two rinks as follows, viz :- Fitness, Penny, J. Adams and Pearce (fkip) ; Townson, W. Baker, Blake and Keith (skip . " I want to see every young woman in this country who is engaged, or who may be engaged to a young fellow," said Sir Joseph Ward in his speech at Gisborne, " tell him straight out if he shirks his duty that you will have nothing to do with him." (Applause). A good house should be assured on the occasion of the concert to be givon in the Premier Hall, Pukekohe, on Tuesday next in aid of the fund for supplying comforts for soldiers The programme will be submitted by pupils of Miss Millicent Taylor, assisted by visitors from Auckland.
Experiments with different processes of tar formation for roads are being carried out in Pukekohe. Recently a portion of King street, in the vicinity of the National Bank, was asphalted and now a further stretch of the road is being treated with the patent preparation known as Bituco.
Brigadier Carmichael and StaifCapt. Gunn, the leading oiHcers of the Salvation Army in Auckland, are to visit Pukekohe this weekend, and will be conducting special meetings all day on Sunday, viz, at 11 a.m., 3 p m., and 7 p.m. In the afternoon Brigadier Carmichael will speak as to his experience on a German steamer when war was declared. All are invited to attend. The following tenders for the erection of business premises at Pukekohe for Messrs E. Perkins Co. have been received by the architect, Mr John Routly, viz. :-C. F. 11aminon and Sons £4050, J. \V. Bambury £-1193, G. H. Edwards £3B'J ( J, Lee McKinstry £3897, Bellhouse and Smith £3845, Pattison and Brooks £3681, W. J. Worth £3578, D. W. Lindsay (Pukekohe) £3225. The Pukekohe Military Reception Committee extend an invitation to the boys of the Thirteenth Reinforcements now on leave to be present at the Premier Hall tonight. Arrangements have been made to make a presentation to all the boys who have not previously been farewelled. The boys are also invited to bring their parents All soldiers in unif >rm are invited to be present. The " F.e?dom Advertiser " (Dakota, has a forcible way of telling subscribers to pay up arrears. " It is reported that one of Harvey's fastidious newly - married ladies kneads bread with her gloves on. The incident may be peculiar but there are others. The editor of this paper needs bread with his shoes on. He needs bread with his pants on, and unless some of the delinquent subscribers to this ' Old Rag of Freedom' pay up before long, he will need bread without a darned thing on, and North Dakota is no Garden of Eden in the winter timr."
Anglican churchmen had ample opportunity iu the Pukekohe district of joining in the commemorations of Anzac Day. Holy Communion was celebrated at St. Andrew's Church at 7.30 am , and at Pukekohe East at 11 a.m. at both of which services special prayers were said. A memorial service, whii h followed the order o'' one of tho services put forth la>t ye;ir by the Bishop of the Lfiocese, was held in the Parish Church at 2.1 J pm. The Vicar delivered a short address, in which he drew atten'ion to the great sacrifice made by the brave men who laid down their lives, and pointed out the obligation of iheir countrymen to live lives worthy of that great sacrifice. In the evening at 7.30 a special service of thanksgiving was held in the same building. Beginning with Evensong, in which special psalms and lessons were chosen, it followed in the latter part the order of service used in Westminster Abboy. The musical portion of tho services reilected credit upon the small choir which lead tho singing. There were lair congregations at all services.
