THE Pukekohe and Waiuku Times PUBLISHED ON TUESDAY AND FRIDAY AFTERNOONS.

TUESDAY, APRIL 25, 1916 PROGRESS AND RETRENCHMENT.

"We nothing extenuate, nor Bet down auqhl in malice."

The anticipated developments in regard to Borough Council matters in Pukekohe did not eventuate at the monthly meeting held last Wednesday and the business transacted was simply of the ordinary routine character. At the close of the meeting, however, the Council went " into committee " to discuss financial matters but no pronouncement was subsequently made as to any result arrived at. The estimate of the revenue required for the current year is naturally dependent on the works projected "by the Council and until these latter are determined on the annual budget will not be forthcoming. Any increase in rating would be decidedly unpopular but it is understood that Cr Roadley lias initiated a plan whereby if an £BOOO loan was approved of by the ratepayers certain schemes could be carried out with a saving of present-day expenditure. A change iu the water-supply system, according to rumour, is suggested as affording scope for retrenchment and it is said that water from a new source of supply could be forced by nieana of a ram to a reservoir to be constructed on some suitable site, thus dispensing with the pumping machinery at the power-house, which could be utilised ' for the installation of electric lighting. If found feasible such an undertaking would probably be gladly endorsed by the ratepayers and the Council are accordingly acting very wisely iu endeavouring to bring about improvements, which instead of increasing liabilities would bo substantially remunerative.
