PUKEKOHE PUBLIC LIBRARY.

The annual meeting of subscribers to the Pukekohe Public Library was held yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon, Mr R. F. Webster presiding and the attendance numbering five. The annual report stated that the total of subscriptions was £2 7s. The euiu of £l4 5s Dd had beeu ppont in the purchase of books representing an addition of 73 volumes to the Library, making a total of 1440 volumes. A good proportion of the books added were of a useful nature to an agricultural and dairying community, but were rarely issued. Gifts of magazines were received from Mr A. B. Barter and weie much appreciated by the Committee. The Government had intimated that no library subsidies would be paid in the current year; consequently additional efforts would have to be made to enable the incoming Committee to provide fresh books. The Committee desired to acknowledge the valuable services rendered by Mr J. Penman as librarian. The number of subscribers only totalled 18 The balance sheet.showed receipts amounting to £GG (Jj 7d, including £2O 10s ( Jd balance brought forward £ll 6s member*' subscriptions, £25 Borough Council grant and £0 9s lOd Government grant. The expenditure, including £2O librarian's fee, £6 7s 8d lighting, etc", and £l4 os 9d books, totalled £52 19a od, leaving a balance in hand of £l3 7s 2d.

On the motion of Mr F. Hubbard, the report and balance sheet were adopted. Messrs R. F. Webster, J. Adams and Dr. Wake were, appointed as the subscribers' representatives on the committee, Mr Webster being elected Chairman and Secretary. Mr J. F. Deane was appointed Auditor. A discussion ensued as to the best method of popularising the Library and it was decided to request the Borough Council to strike a Library rate in place of the present grant, the issue of books to be free to all residents.
