Arising out of the police crusade to stop the practice of Maoris being supplied with liquor for consumption oil' licensed premises two defendants i a pakeha and a Maori) had each to pay a tine of £o, exclusive of cost.*, ut the I'ukekohe Magistrate's Court on Friday hist. In the case of a theft by a Maori a tint of £lO was imposed. The cases are duly recorded in tiio Police Uouit report in this issue.

OLD L\DY S SUDDEN DEATH

An Inquest was held on Saturday morning at the Tuakau Hotel by Mr C. Eoadley, District Coroner, on the body c-f Mrs Mary Junes, a widow, 84 years of age, who had resided for several years past in Biver road, Tuakau. Mr Percy Lapwool, canier, gave evidence to the eifect that whilst passing the deceased's house about 4.15 on the previous (Friday) afternoon he noticed tho old lady lying on the ground at the back of her house. He went to the spot and tiuding life extinct he informed Constable Taylor Mrs Amelia Collins, a neighbour, deposed that she saw the deceased, who lived alone, outside the house about 11.30 in the morning. The dc,ceased, she added, often complained of pains in the region of her heart. Mrs Mary Harriet Frost, also a neighbour, stated that she had known the deceased for the last 20 years and a little time back she the deceased) was attended by Dr Cheeseman, who mentioned that her heait was weak and her death might take place suddenly at anytime. Dr C. H. Wake, of Pukekohe, having expressed the opinion that death was due to heart failure the Coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.

The deceased's husband died some 14 years ago and there are no known relatives existing. The police have taken charge of deceased's property and her estate will pass into the hands of the Public Trustee.
