PAPAKURA.
(See also Page 4. The Clerk's chair at the Town Board meeting on Friday evening was vacant through that gentleman having to undergo ah operation. Members expressed regret and hoped that Mr Geissler would be restored to health within a short period. It is understood that ratepayers will have a very satisfactory account of the Town Board's doings placed before them at the annual meeting of ratepayers, to be held shortly. It is now reported by the Defence Department that A. Bond (Guss), late of the local railway staff, has been presumed to be killed. He was previously reported missing. In the latest list of enlistments appear the names of K. Slack, G. Johnson and J. P. Williams, all of Papakura.
FAEEWELL SOCIAL. A very successful function was held on Mondoy night of last week in the Parish Hall, Papakura, to farewell Mr L McKinstry who was leaving the next day to join the 15th Beinforcements. The gathering consisted of members of the Church of England congregation, Mr McKinstry being a member both of the Yestry and Choir. The Bev. A. C. Wood in presenting the guest with a wristlet watch, soldiers' companion, and fountain pen on behalf of the Church people, said he proud of the fact that when i Mr McKinstry- decided it was his duty to offer his services he placed himself unreservedly in the hands of the authorities, with the result that he was leaving at a few days notice. Mr McKinstry was a good church man, the* speaker said, and would prove a good soldier and he wished him every success and a safe return. Mr D. Stewart, chairman of the Papakura Town Board, gave the guest the best wishes of his fellow townspeople and said he wished more of the Papakura young men were following Mr McKinstry's example. Mr D. W. Jones spoke on behalf of the members of the Vestry, while Messrs Holt and Cole expressed good wishes as representing the Papakura Eecruiting Committee. Mr McKinstry returned thanks. During the evening the following contributed items :—Misses Wood, Denyes, Hodge and Mr Mc Kinstry, Mrs H. Walters presiding at the piano. The gathering was brought to a conclusion by the singing of the King."
