FLOWER SHOW AT PUKEKOHE.

A Capital Display. Despite the prolonged dry weather militating against th 9 culture of flowers the annual autumn show of ,tho Pukekohe and District Horiicultuial Society, which was opened in the Premier Hall yesterday afternoon, provides a highly attractive display and before the doors finally close to night (Friday) is well worth witnessing by the resident* of the district. Naturally many classes that are usually well filled are this year without a single entry, due to want of rain retarding growth, and in this respect the entire absence of chrysanthemums and only one exhibit of gerariums are noticeable. On tho other hand, however, there are on view some extremely choice specimens of floral products, dahlias particularly being of great merit. The Rev. S. Nixon scored largely with various blocms and he had the distinction of showing the champion dahlia of the show, a large white and graceful specimen of the Cactus Snowdon variety. Cosmos, although not numerous, made a very pretty display, those of the crested class shown by Dr Wake and securing first prize being somewhat of a novelty and most effective. In floral artistry, the winning

yases, bowls, epergnes, and baskets of flowers, and the first prize bridal bouquet denoted most artistic handiwork on the part of the competitors, chief honours falling to Mrs Ivan Motion (first for bridal bouquet, epergne of flowers, and bowl of flowers), Mrs W. J. D. Sharp (first for basket of flowers and ba'ket of dahlias), and Mrs A. Grigor (first for vase of flowers). In decorated dinner tables Mrs Ivan Motion won first prize with a very pretty display of a blue tone, whilst in a similar class for shaded eflects Mrs Grigor was successful with a neat exhibit of lavender to purple colours. Yegetables,-considering the season, made an excellent showing and testified to the capabilities of Pukekohe's soil for that particular form of produce. Home Industries, always of a strong order at shows in Pukekohe, u nce again ably demonstrated the attainments in the culinary art of the ladies of the district. Cakes, scones, pickles, preserves, etc., reached a very high standard and a collection of lollies, made by Miss E. W. Rodgers, was particularly

attractive. Hie children's efforts iu floral exhibits and cookery, us well as in writing and educational subjects, were highly meritorious. Among the exhibits " not for competition" wa3 an unusually choice and eminently artistic showerbouquet of cactus dahlias, shaded and blended in colour from champagne to pink and dark cardinal, shown by Mrs McKay, of Auckland. A pot plant bearing a graceful bloom of wine hue resembling curled ostrich feathers was exhibited by of Runciiuan, and its and quaintness was ° discharged ! the duties with his usual and ability and iu the work of preparation for the show he was loyally assisted by the President (Dr Wake) ; Mesdames I. A. Motion, J. M. Baxter, Brewer and j 11. Webb , and Messrs A. B. Barter, J. M. Baxter, F. E. Simpson, Lusher, Patterson, Townaou, Grigor, A- Dickens aud J. 11. Webb. Prize List.
