AUSTRALIAN ANECDOTES.
There are some amusing anecdotes j in the volume of l; Recollections" re-| cently published by tiie Hon. John Mil- i died Creed, member of the Legislative ' Council of New South Wales, and a ; well-known Sydney doctor. On one ; occasion he had to carry on the work ! of a magistrate for six months. Dur- | ing this time a great Hood occurred, j and the lock-up was surrounded by : water, a strong current passing through i the cells. The sergeant in charge was I so strictly official that lie would take j no action on his own responsibility. ! He therefore telegraphed to his super- j jor offieer : "Mood three iect deep sur. , rounding and running through lock-up. i Have four prisoners on tables iu the | ceil-. \\ ater rising. Shall I take them I out or let them drown!''' He at once received the necessary authority, acted ' on it promptly, and the prisoners were I saved. I
At an official dinner nt which Dr. Creed was present some little tunc h<> heard what he thought as an exceedingly smart retort. A distinguish, ed counsel ot llehraic descent went up to an important law ofiicei of tin- j Crown, a very fjood tellow. hut not 1 noted tor Haying <_ r rcat attention to j his dree", said said to him: "lieally, ; old man, you outfit not to he so care- | less. You've worn that shirt before;! and isn't it about unie you had a new j suit'' " -My dear leilow, ' war- the j prompt retort, "what an eye your people have for old clothes!" One more extract :s described as an example of the | "extreme propriety of a lady typist." I A draft prospectus of a mine which • she hail typed out was submitted to I me. One paragraph dealing with the ! develvpnient of the property read as l'oilows : "Prospecting shafts have been sunk, a race cut, and the creek has ! been d d."
