PATUMAHOE

The very welcome rains that fell in this district on bunday night and nearly all day Monday will freshen up the pastures and allow the ground to be worked up for autumn gras3 sowing. A small farm of some 45 ceres, owned by Mr James Hunter, of Fatumahoe, Rives an indication of what can be done under intpnse cultivation. The farm is 9ituated on the top of a hill, and the soil, which is of a heavy volcanic nature end lays well to the sun with a very warm aspect. it is free from frosts and is therefore very suitable for early potato and onion growing. Mr HunUr had half an acre under early potatoes, and dug 6 tons 16 cwt of marketable tubers, netting him £45 He also had one acre of later potatoep, which he has just dog. These have turned out 7 tons 6cwt, valued at £56. He had a half acre plot of oniooe, from which he toik 5 tons 6cwt, and with ths low value of these vegetables this season they gave a return of about £25. Be also bad three and a-half acres in wheat and three acres in oatß, ajjd these crops are now in stack, together with a large stack of meadow hay. He has a first-class dairy herd of ten cows, and continues dairying through winter and summer, besides running several young stock and two horses

Some commotion waß caused in Patumahoe on Wednesday afternoon by tfce threatening behaviour of an individual labouring under the influence ot drink who, waving a stick, threatened to "lay out" ali with whom he ome in contact. The Pukekohe police were telephoned to and Constable Thornell came out and arrested the aggressive customer whose name was John McCormack. Charged yesterday at the Pukekohe Police Court, before Mtssrs J T Stembridge and C K Lawn?, J.P.'s, with vagrancy he was sentenced to one month's imprisonment witb hard labour
