WAIKATO RIVER NAVIGATION.
Jn conversation with a "Ngaruawahia Advocate ' representative, referring to the schemes lor lowering the iavel, deepening and narrowing the Waikato river, and making it more easily navigable, Mr J Civil, eneineer to the Raglan County Council, said that he could not give any definite opinion unlefs he saw the levels for himself. The man in charge of the work at »the Head?, he thought, was a capable man, and should know what he was doing. There wbs one thing, however, that he thought was a weakness: instead cf the levels only being tiken as far as Mercer, or Huntly, Ihey should have been ascertained right up tu Ngaruawahia. There would then be a yeod basis to work on. Also, Mr Civil said, provision woulJ hive to be made by a system of locks, probably, Jo insure that the lowering of the river would i.ot deprive settlers living near some of the tributaries of the liver of their waterways. This kind of provision was commonly made in England, and Would, doubtless, have to be made here
