School matters in the district which for some time past had remained at normal are again the tcpic of coonvetsation, and following on the meeting held ricenlly promise to develop to an interesting stage. The general opinion at the presert time is that the competition between portions of the district to collect the largest sum to offer to the Auckland Education Board in the hope of obtaining assistant for a certain ar:a is not conducive to or 10 conformity with the welfare of the district, nor doss it tend in any way to assist the Board in deciding what part of the district is most worthy and suitable for consideration Many a young man who is physically fit and eligible for service can take an example from Mr Bartley Geraghty : s action in arriving at the deciFion to go to the front. Mr Geraghty hus a wife and faintly dependant on him, and has large business interests in the district. Neverthelees he .has answered the call for men, imdestly saying: "I can handle a musket and could ahoot a Turk; why should i not go'.' It ie my duty, and I must go."
