When Mr. Dohbs reached the bootmaker's shop where he had left lii> Ik,.>ts to Ik; mended his heart sank. Although it was early in the evening, the shop was closed, and apparently de-'U'ted. He banged on the front don lustily, and at. length Cobbs thrust his head through an upper window. "What d'ye want?" he asked. 'My hoots,'' said Mr. Doltbs. "V.i said you'd have tliom ready for nie." "Hut haven't you heard?" said t lie cobbler: "I've failed—gone bankrupt!" "I don't care! I want my boots!' said Dobhs angrily. (V;hs disappeared, and an instant later one hoot clattered down at Dobb's fee:. ••But whore's the other?"' he cried. ■•That's all you'll get," said Cobb'. "I'm only p.i\ing ten shillings in th • pound."
