Lack of interest n local affairs in Pukekohe was again demonstrated on Wednesday evening in regard to a meeting of ratepayers that had been convened by the Mayor tor the purtoie of giving consideration to the proposal of the Borough Council to prccicd with their scheme of drainage. All told the attendance only numbered nine and the meeting was accordingly abandoned
In a certain town in Australia one of the churchwardens is, during the week-dajs, a tobacconist, and not averse to executing little racing commissio:"s for his customeis. Whilst engaged yesterdav afternoon in carting a crop of oats from Mr W Koulson's paddock in East street, Pukekohe, a man named George O'Brien hid the misfortune to meet with a painful accident. He was seated on the t"p of a fully-loaded waiigon, and with a jolt occurring as the cart pass.d over the water-taul» from the pavement on to the road some of tin sheaves slid out, with the result that O'Brien was dislodged from his pe:ch and fell under the waggon, one of the wheels of which passed over his n<jay. Dr Wake was sent for, and it was round that O'Brien had sustained a fracture ot some of his ribs, and ha was taken to the Auckland Hospital this morning.
