PAPAKURA TOWN BOARD.

Monthly Meeting'l'he regular monthly meeting of the above-mentioned authority wan held on Monday evening last. Present: Messrs D Stewart, chairman. R W Mears, D W Jones, T U Gampbell, J H Bates, together with the clerk, Mr H W Geissler A JOINT POUND

A letter was received from the clerk to the Wairoa Koad Board stating that his authority had discussed and adopted the projected scheme of establishing a pound at Ardmore, under the jurisdiction of the Wairoa and Fapakura Road Boards and the Papakura Town Board, and that the Wairoa Road Board's action in connection therewith had been endorsed, and, further, that Mr A D Bell had been elected to represent the Board on the joint committee ot alt the Boards concerned The chairman stated he had read in the M Times" ot the Franklin County Council's intention to assist the project On the motion of Mr Jones it was agreed that tha chairman should represent the Board on the j)int committee

BOUNDARY KOADS Intimation of bis intention to forward for the Board's approval and execution, the draft of the agreement arrived at tor the control of the boundary roads, wsb recjived from Mr Alan P Day, clerk to the Franklin County Council NO METAL AVAILABLE The County Clerk further advised the Board of the Counci'a mabillitv to supply the Board with metal from the l'apakura quarry this year A DEFECTIVE WATEK-I'ABLE Application waß rrade by Mr E Bullen, Fapakura, for repairj to prevent water from flowing past his gate in wet weather. He stated that the water-table in the vicinity had not been attended to tor six years

It was reßolved that the Board should inspect the cause of the defect, and should then ispue instructions to have the matter attended to A RESIDENT'S PROTEST Mr Fred Manning complained to the Board of the condition of that portion of Green street leading to his gate. He contended that it was practically impassabla last winter for vehicular traffic and that it repairs were not effected forthwith conditions would become worse. He further stated that the Bobrd decided last year to make improvements but action was deterred until the present year The chairman stated that the Boar.l inspected the road hill notli ing wan done (hereto Mi Jones claimed that the Hoard did not decide on any deiinite action in reference to repairs, but agreed IMMIMMm

On th 3 proposition of Mr Jones, the chairman was dfputed to wait on the engineer with a view of having the work nf taking the levels proceeded with immediately, the clerk, in the meantime, to write Mr Manning stating that if it was impossible for the engineer to visit Papakura the Board would endeavour to comply with Mr Manning's request ATTENTION WANTED

Mr Wm Hichardson waited on the Board and requested that the ur.metslled portion of Elliott street which waß rendered a bog latt winter through the cattle traffic to and from the saleyards, should be put into order. He stated that Crs Flanagan and Lockwood, of the Franklin County Council, inspected the road last year and as a result the Board was instructed to make improvements, the Cour.cil bearing halt the cost. He considered that with three trucks ot Ecoria tbe Board ceuld repair the road. Tbe cost would be about £7

Mr Jones stated that tbe Board decided last July to have the matter attended to. The road was inspected and it was resolved that the wateMabhs should be lowered to carry the water away, 'l'he Board had, consequently, not overlooked the matter The chairman remarked that no letter had been received from the Franklin County Council with reference to the projected improvement of the road Mr Richardson claimed that if tbe reports were perused it would be found that the Council had dealt with the matter, and that the clerk had received instructions to communicate with the Board with reference thereto Mr Jones Baid that as the Board controlled the road they cauld proceed with the work and debit the Council with half the cost The chairman informed Mr Richardson that his suggestion re the tcoria would be taken into consideration, but he could promise him nothing in regard to the amount of work ths Board would undertake to de. The Beard had already decided, however, to plough the water-table so that the water would run away and would tot impair the road A BUILDING PERMIT

Mr Richardson, as a trustee ot the Methodist Church, submitted a plan ot a building it was proposed to erect adjoining the Methodist Chirch, and asked for a building permit for tbe same.—The request was granted BLACKBERRIES Mr Richardson further referred to the nuisance of blackberries in Elliott street It was agreed that all offenders be notified to clear their frontages ot the pest YOUNG S BEACH Mr Jones drew attention to the necissity of erecting bathing sheds on Young's beach and to generally dealing with matters connect 1 therewith. He pointed out that the beach was gaining in popularity, and suggested that one shed, for th 3 use of the ladiae, might be erected before the presEnt season closed at an approximate cost of £lO, with further sheds to be erected next yeir The chairman was in sympathy with the suggfstion, but was doubtful if ths finances wculd allow of the necessary expenditure Mr Bates proposed that the Board as a whole should visit the beach in connection with the proposal Mr Campbell seconded, and the motion was agreed to MISCELLANEOUS

Mr Batfs made reference to the requirements of Rouselle street,' which in his opinion urgently required attention. —lbe chairman said that although it was decided at the first meeting of the present Board held 18 months bgo to have improvements made on the road nothing had been done.—lt was resolved, on Mr Mears' proposal, to call tenders for forming four and a half chains of the road The chairman reported that Mr S Evans had approached him in connection with a roid running trom the Great South road through allotment 10 to 13, inclusive, of eeition eight, parish of Opaheke, to the Valley road, which he desired to have opened and the Railway Department to make a crossing. The chairman explained that the Railway Department fenced the rdad off when working thereabouts.—it was resolved that an application be forwarded to the Department claiming that the road shoold be opened up as a public thoroughfare and requesting th®' Department to make the crossin g and, further, that the Fapakura, Valley Koad Board be invited to support the application It was resolved to order 150 yards of metal from the Priron Department, Auckland, 30 yards of which to go on Kanfurlv road and the balance to be distributed on roac"s requiring repairs; and to call tenders returnable at the following meeting of the Board, for the levelling and draining, etc., of East street

The question of eradicating the noxious weeds trom the cemetery was discussed, and it was agreed that the sexton should spend several days in renovating it Two months' leave of absence waa granted Mr W Crawford, who is taking a trip for the benefit of his health TO ASSIST KECKUITINU

It way resolved in accordance with the request ol the National Keeruiting Board to form the Board into a Keeruiting Committee! and to invite the following gentlemen to co-operate with the Board in the matter, viz, Messrs Gillespie, A Willis, S Evans, E b Cole, Hoult and tbs Revs Wood, Madill and Potter A DOMAIN BOARD Sitting as the Pohurehure Domain Board, Mr Geissler, secretary and treasurer, submitted the annual balance sheet, which showed a credit balance of £l6 12s 9d. The balance sheet was adopted, and it was decided to have the blackberries cleared from the Domain
