REV. J. P. COWIE WELCOMED

A welcome in ths form of a social was tendered in the Oddfellows' Hall, Pukekohe, on Monday evening last by tbe parishioners of St Andrew's Church to the Kev J P Cowie, who recently succeeded the Rev F B Dobson as Vicar of Pukekohe. 'lhere was a good attendance, and Mr J B Brown presided

The lirst portion of the proceedings took the form of a musical programme, which was contributed to by Mesjamis Andrew and Wylie, and the Misses M Woods, Muriel Cox, Aldridge, and Lorna Andrew, Messrs L Wilson and J Brown. Miss Millicent Tavlir and Miss Ivy Brown acted as accompanists A few speeches followed, the chairman formally introducing the Vicar to Ihs parishioners. On behalf of the Vestry, Mr R Bilkey, Vicar's Warden, welcomed the Kev Cowie to the district, and hoped that bis work would be successful and his residence amongst them pleasant The Mayor, Mr H G R Mason, as representing the people o,t the borough, expressed pleasure in welcoming the rev gentleman to their midst. He felt certain that tin brst of feelings would prevail between the Vicar and those under his charge, and he believed the latter would do their part in assist* mg him in everv passible way Mr H Wilcox, Bucklaud, on behalf of tbe outlying districts also offered greetings to the new Vicar, and the chairman expressed the deßire of the lay-reidera to work loyally with him The Vicar, oa rising to return thanks, met with a very cordial reception. He apologised for tbe absence that evening of Mre Cowie, the same being due to ihe indisposition of one of their children. They had, he said, commenced their work in Pukekohe with joy and happiness and with the co-operation of the parishioners he trusted his labours woull meet with success

Supp;r, served ty the ladies, was then partiken of, and the programme concluded with the singing of the National Anthem
