"Suppose, may boy," said tbe father impressively to bis young sod, whom be was lecturing on the responsibilities of life, "that 1 should he taken away suddenly. Now what would become of you?" —"Ob. I'd be all right," retorted the young hopeful. "The question is: What would become of you?" A joke is occasionally (alas, very occasionally) manufctured by borough councillors. "What is a sheep dog?" asked a councillor at the meeting ot the Riccarton Borough Council last week, apropos ot a proposal to let sheep dogs "down lightly" in tbe matter of tax "Is it a dug that tuns after sheep?" "Yes," was the reply. "That's mine," responded the curious one; "but," he added sadly, "it got shot for it!"
