County Matters at Onewhero.
; TO THE EDITOR. ] Sir, —Your correspondent has sent in a misleading aad one-sided report of the meeting ot rattpayers held here on 22nd December last. In fact only ore portion of my remarks were sent in, and that twisted to as to convey an entireiy different meaning to what was intended by me. The statement that 1 criticised the County system of book-keeping is a deliberate mie-statement. On the contrary, I know our Countv Cleik is one cf the all st in the Dominion, and jilwavs receives high praise from the Government Auditors for the manner in which his accounts are kept. Tien your corre'pondent mentions live gentlemen who t ok part in an alleged healed discussion, whereas two of ihose mentioned never orecei their mouths, and anotter asked ore question. No man with a spark of British fair-play in Lis nature woulJ send in such a report. It is only for U:e purpose of putting myself right with any outside this district who may have read the report that I aak you to Kndly insert this in your correspondence column, and to publish the appended copy of my riding account. The ratepayers of Onewhero understand the position perfectly—l am, etc, D A MOOKE Onewhero, 15th January, 1916 ONEWHEKO HIDING ACCOUNT Year Ending 31st March, 1915 Keceipts
m Papakura Water Supply. 110 THE EDITOR. | Sir,—A letter rs the above appeared in yaur issue of January sth. As a ratepayer I vaa pleased to see that the question of water for I'apakura was "not quite dead'' The scheme that was placed before the ratepayers a couple of years ago—and turned down—was a gravitation supply from the idunua Gorge Btream, the intake being a little over four miles from the railway station, at an elevation of 350 feet. The estimated quantity available during the dry season waa one ar.d a-half million gallons in twenty-tour hours. The cost with 6-inch main, delivering 370,000 gallons per twenty-four with a pressure of 1501bs to the square inch, waa estimated at £6500. The quality of the water is first-class, the watershed is one of the best id the province, and when the necessity comes for ».he quantity to be increased, millions of gallons ran be stored by building a dam across a narrow gully The pumping scheme "laihoa" advocates is not a good one. In the first place the water has to be found by boring, pumping machinery and a reservoir erected, and the services of a permanent engineer and assistant retained, and u> less the reservoir is placed on a high elevation sufficient pressure will not he obtained. No heal body would ever think of any oilier scheme where a gravitation ona wsb available, for the pbvious reason '.hat once the scheme is installed the expense is practically over; whereas with a pumping scheme it is a continuous cne. 1 venture to say the capital cost ct "Taihoa's" scheme would not be far short ct the one the late Town Boaid advocated, having out the eaet of running and maintenance. What wc do want is a permanent scheme, giving a supply that can be increased by storage at a small extra cost wben the need arises
Another phase r,f this question is that of drainage, which ia fast becoming an urgent necosity in the centre of the towusbip; b:it, of course, nothing can be done until a water supply is an acomplished fact. The Railway Dipartment have in view extensive alterations at the Papakura railway st3tion wben money is available. Papakura will be the terminus of thj suburban train tervice, engine sheds, etc, will be built, and il the district has a water cupply the Department will immediately become a good customer. We also have a prospective customer in the li-ing district ( f Manurewa
With regard to the liuhtin.', I would like to see some system installed, but lighting is more in the nature of a luxury and should give fust place to water and draicag<; 1 am, etc, ISAFE NAI'E
