LOANS REFUSED.

The endeavours cf the f'ukekohe Borough Council to promote toe well-being and development of the town proved all i.i vain as the result cf the votes of the ratepayer? at the loan polls taken yesterday, with ths exception that a loan of £3OO for hire Brigade purposes secured approval. Ths ratepayers can hardly he congratulated on the decisions arrivod at nor on the extreme indifference with which the holding of the poll was generally regarded. Until more animation and interest prevails in public life in i'ukekohe there seams very little chance of modern nays and facilities taking the place >»t the more or less ancient order of things that now unfortunately characterises local conditions. At the same timu it must be admitted that the loan proposals wert not submitted in a mauner that could assure complete confidence 03 the part of the public. In the first place they lacked the hall-mark of efficiency by the absence ot expert draughtmanship, but it is only fair to the Council to say that economical motives prompted them to retrain from employing a consulting engineer until after the principle of the bans had been adopted. Still ceitain deficiencies were thereby noted 111 the schemes and probably in a spirit of caution ratepayers preferred not ti [authorise expenditure. It must be taken as evident trom tin poll that there is little chancs of works being sanctioned by the ratepayers unless reliable expert assurance is forthcoming that all is in order and success certain.
