On New Year's night the lovers of the "social" form of enjoyment met in the hall and had real good time until the bewitching hour. Songs were interspersed with the dances, and were much appreciated. Those in charge of the function did their utmost to make it a success and admirably they succeeded
The bulk of the hay and cereal harvest is now gathered in and farmers seem to be satisfied. The hay is heavy and plentiful. The grain crops, though touched with rust, are fairly good and heavy and are turning out better than was anticipated. Mr B. Dawson, of Wiri, with his engine and hay press, has been busy baling hay and it looks as if he has been doing a thriving business in this district. A good quantity has been forwarded on to Auckland. The Ladies' Patriotic Guild are still going strong and doing good work. Their parcel for this month is as follows :—tfo pairs of socks, 2 Balaclavas, 1 scarf, 3 cholera belts. Mrs and Misses Hamilton, 12 pairs socks ; Mrs McAdams, 8 pairs; Mesdames Barclay, W. Cossoy, W. Strong, I. McMurtrie and Miss Hill, 2 pairs each; Mesdames \V. Brooks, Jas. Blake, Jno. Blake, Hewlett, Fyfe, 1 pair each. Misses Glasson and Cossey, 1 Balaclava each. Misses Bernard, Home and Eona Fyfe, 1 cholera belt each. Miss Glennie McNaughton, I scarf. A pleasing function took place at the break up of the Sunday School, when the Bev. J. D. Madill, on behalf of the teachers and pupils, made a presentation to Miss Viti Home, who was severing her connection with the school, of which she has long been a most popular teacher. The present was a handsome and valuable silver cake basket. Mr McNaughton returned thanks for Miss Home and as president of the Sunday School congratulated her on the work she had done in the past, and trusted her future would be bright. The reason of Miss Home's resignation is matrimony. Still our boys are going to the front the brothers Churches being the latest to go forward. Mr George F. Bruce has enlisted in Auckland and Mr Ernest Hill in Palmerston North. Both are from this district. Mr Sutton launched a new boat on the river last week. It is the handiwork of an Auckland builder and is greatly admired.
