THE Pukekohe and Waiuku Times PUBLISHED MONDAYS, WEDNESDAYS AND FRIDAYS.
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1915 TO ARMS!
"We nothing extenuate, nor tet down auoht in malice."
The 11th Reinforcements haye now reached Trentham and the ' authorities state that the shortage of men is about 500. The Auckland District has been called on to complete its quota to the extent of a further 90 and supply Southern deficiencies to the extent of 96 men. These are required fo leave for Trentham today. This necessarily neana that many more men will lequire to enlist if this district keeps up its record of always filling up its quota. By the 28th December 25 Infantry are required from No. 4 Group area and a further 140 Infantry on the 11th January. The Premiei of the Australian Commonwealth in addressing a meeting to arrange for the dispatch of an extra 50,000 men pointed out thai if the men had been available earlier the psssibilities of the campaign might have been considerably different. N one of the Allies doubt as to who will emerge successful but to bring matters to a speedier conclusion it is essential above all that we should maintain our Army at its maximum strength and its maximum efficiency—to do this men are required. Men and yet more men. The need is urgent and on the response to tho call to arms may depend the decision of some vital engagement.
We should point out that it is highly desirable that all men whether they can go immediately or not should without further delay register, their names as willing to serve. They have done so in the National Register, but that is not sufficient. Even if unable to get away immediately still it is the duty of our men to register so that the Authorities may know when they may rely on their services being available. It is a matter of common knowledge that harvest operations are now in full swing but these will come to an end before many weeks are passed, and it behoves our men of military age to do their duty. Many will find it impossible to make complete arrangements by the end of this month, but there are 140 required by the llth January and the Authorities look to this District to show its patriotism in a practical manner. Wherefore let our young men show that we need no call for conscription in New Zealand, but that the example set us by those who have gone, aye, those who have laid down their lives for us on the Gallipolian hills has not been in vain, and that it only needs the call for our men to forthwith spring to arms! ! Jn view of the urgency of the demand the Mayor of Pukekohe has convened a public meeting of citizens for Monday evening next for the purpose of taking .'steps to enlist all possible recruits.
