LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Xmas Cards, Presentation Books and Annuals in great variety at The Bookery, Pukekohe.—advt. The Franklin County Council give particulars in our columns of a proposed loan of £2OOO for an Aka Aka special rating district, Bnd also of a loan of £IOO in respect ot Jamieson's road, Buckland. Patterns of all the designs of fashions, etc., appearing in our supplement, week by week, can be obtained by sending stamps, value 7d, for every pattern required (coat, skirt, blouse, one-piece gown, etc) to Miss Ida Meller, Care of the Editor. The envelope should be marked "Patterns." The Railway Department is once more to be asked by the Fukekohe Chamber of Commerce to solve the conundrum of the actual distance between the Pukekohe and Buck land railway stations. In the official time-table the journey on the southward tun is scheduled at two miles (which according to the Chamber's contention is correct), whereas for the "up" trains the distance is set down at three miles. When the matter was previously brought forwaid red-taps methods failed to bring about a rectification of tbe absurdity.

A very fine display of Eeaonable fruit is to be seen at Mr Heerdegen's establishment, Lawria's Buildings, Pukekohe, and tbe proprietor informs tbe public that in catering for tbe Christmas trade entirely new stocks have been - and will be secured. The re3ult of the analyses made by tbe Health Department uf the samples of water taken from the Pukekohe bore, main and reservoir, will be announced at to-night's meeting of the Borough Council. In the meantime it i 3 reassuring to know that the reservoir was drained off on Monday evening and was thoroughly cleaned. By order of the Public Trustee a clearance sale of live and dead stock is to be held by Messrs Alfred Buckland and Sons on Saturday next on the late Mr J Perry's farm at Kama Rama. The same iirm are also to carry out a clearing sale on Mr E Kye's farm at Mauku on Thursday uf bext week. Particulars will be found in our advertising columns. In addition to the farewell arranged to be accorded to the Rev. F. B. Dobsan by the congregation of the Pukekohe Anglican Church it is proposed that the valuable services he has to tbe district during his 19 years' charge of the parish should be recognised in some suitable public form by members of 1 all denominations. A meeting for the purposj ot initiating such a muvement is t» be held in the Borough Council Chambers un Saturday evening next. The practice of country residents securing a reduction in railway fares to Auckland by booking to Manurewa and back and taking return ticketß from tbe guard on the train at suburban rates to acd from the city has thi3 week resulted in a crusade by the Railway Department, and passengers hava not only been refused the suburban concession, but tbey have been charged fares at extra mileage with 6d extra added tor tickets issued in tha trains making the total 6d more than' if the tickets were issued at the starting point. It appears thst although Manurewa is scheduled as a flag Btation the Railway .Department has supplied' tbe resident porter there with a' stock of tickets, with a view of checking the custom alluded to and tbe action taken is the sequel It is, however, suggested that if passengers actually alight at Manurewß, or indeed at stations in the suburban area, viz., Papakura or Takanini, these suburban rates can be demanded, and if times does not allow of tha issue of tickets before the train leaves such stations even the 6d extra ehargad by the guard for issuing the tickets on the train will still show a substantial saving as compared with tick&ta taken out for the full journey. Rubber Stmpi ot all description may be ordered at the Office of th "Pukekohe Times." Cail *nd select rom our illustrated catalogue.
